From the introduction: "The books, pamphlets and posters brought together in this Great War catalogue overwhelmingly concern the experience of the British army on the Western Front, whether in military, social or literary terms. Books and pamphlets about the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy as well as theatres of operation other than the Western Front are included, but numerically are less significant. There are a few significant books dealing with the French and German experience of the Great War. The bias within this catalogue reflects the military and literary experience of the British people. The majority of men and women who volunteered or were conscripted served in the army, and most of them saw active service on the Western Front So purely in statistical terms one would expect this service and geographic concentration to be reflected in such a catalogue. But the particular nature of the experience of service on the Western Front encouraged thousands of men and women to write during and after the war on a scale of intensity which was not the case for those who served in the navy or in other theatres of operation. A vast citizen army, many of whom were highly literate, kept diaries, wrote letters, compiled verse and popular songs, a lot of which was eventually to be published." Very Good.

The book is issued without jacket and is in Good condition with overall straight spine, sharp corners and scuffed spine ends. Please note the stains to the boards. The page edges are toned but the interior text block is clean. There are two ex libris paste downs to the inner front board but no signs of library use otherwise. The book has 314 pages including index but discounting adverts. The title page states year of publication as 1926.

Presumed second printing (no direct statement as such by first published by Dodd, Mead in March 1907). i-vii, [1], 1-447 pages. Hardcover: H 21.25cm x L 14.5cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Red cloth lightly rubbed and soiled; gilt lettering to spine and front board remains bright; bumping to spine ends and board corners. Deckle fore-edge and bottom edge; some leaves retain uncut fore-edges. Six-line ink inscription dated January 1, 1911 to Waco, Texas attorney Oscar L. Stribling [Oscar Lee Stribling] (1865-1926) from prominent Waco grocer and banker Edward Rotan (1844-1932). A few spots of foxing and minor soiling to interior leaves which otherwise remain clean. Binding is firm. Bertram Simpson (under his pen name B.L. Putnam Weale) relays events of the 1900 siege of the International Legations in Beijing during the Qing Empire Boxer Rebellion.

Weale was a prolific author on China who was present during the western powers' siege of Peking to retake it from the Boxers. He was deeply critical of the West's actions during the rebellion, and his Indiscreet letters has been identified by later scholars as not a collection of primary documents but an invention by Weale produced after the events to attack "supine British diplomatic leadership" (Bickers, Britain in China).

The book covers the author's journey thru Manchuria in 1903 and is sub-titled " with an historical sketch entitled Prologue to the Crisis." Gives a complete account of the Manchurian frontiers from the earliest days to the growth and final meeting of the Russian and Chinese Empires in the Amur river region.
