Etat : Very Good. ff 40 The octavo-sized minute book of the Priory Church of St Anthony, Lenton, in Nottinghamshire from 1887 when the church was rebuilt to 1897. The book is bound in quarter green roan over textured paper covered boards and in its preamble sets out its role in 'unitedly' meeting 'together to consider matters of… interest and efficiency in Church and schools' with the vicar who presided over the rebuilding, Percy E Smith, in the chair for the inaugural meeing. The election of the first officers is recorded with the first minutes signed by 'C Bloodworth Chairman'. Subsequent meetings consider the Sunday School, additional services and 'Turning down of the Gas in service time. a very bad arrangement.' 'The bad conduct of young people in church' prompts some anguish and there is much debate about the 'damaged stove in the school.' The book is written in an easily legible hand with occasional printed inserts tipped in, usually recording exceptional events such as the resignation of Percy Smith in 1893, a visit by the Bishop of Southwell, an organ recital and the inevitable bazaars. St Anthony's Lenton had been partially dismantled in 1844 and largely rebuilt in 1884 on the site of what was possibly the chapel of the Hospital of St Anthony, itself a part of the monastic buildings of Lenton Priory founded before 1108 by William Peveril. These minutes record the revitalised life of the parish after the reopening. Very Good Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item.
