He was also a highly regarded humorist, novelist and playwright. Presented here is an American reprint of what is likely Herbert's most popular novel, "The Water Gipsies", first published in 1930. It is a light, genial novel about two sisters who operate a barge on rivers and canals in England. Along the way they have various adventures and romantic escapades. ****************** The risqué dust-jacket art by Alfred Skrenda gets my vote as likely the raciest jacket art that Grosset and Dunlap ever issued.
