Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. A. P. Herbert (Sir Alan Patrick Herbert) was a law reform activist, and an independent Member of Parliament for Oxford University (before such university constituencies were ended). He was also a highly regarded humorist, novelist and playwright. Presented here is an American reprint of what is likely Herbert's most popular novel, "The Water Gipsies", first published in 1930. It is a light, genial novel about two sisters who operate a barge on rivers and canals in England. Along the way they have various adventures and romantic escapades. ****************** The risqué dust-jacket art by Alfred Skrenda gets my vote as likely the raciest jacket art that Grosset and Dunlap ever issued. One can see that there is loss to the head of the spine panel, but the remaining jacket looks decent under a protective, archival mylar cover ****************** TITLE : The Water Gipsies / AUTHOR : A. P. Herbert (Sir Alan Patrick Herbert, 1890 - 1971) / IMPRINT : Grosset and Dunlap / PLACE : New York / DATE : No date [ but circa 1935 ] / EDITION : American Reprint / JACKET ART : Alfred Skrenda / STATUS : OP Out of Print Trade hardcover; 414 page + 6 pages of publisher's list; approximately 5 1/4" x 7 3/8"; blue cloth-covered boards with lettering in turquoise blue on spine and front cover; top edge of text-block dyed green, fore-edge rough cut; color pictorial dust-jacket . the jacket features two young ladies, sitting in the all-to-gether by a river . a wooden ship is moored by the bank opposite, beyond sits what looks to be an inn. ************************ CONDITION - A previously owned book that displays modest wear (and loss to jacket), but which remains clean and attractive, with the following noted: EXTERIOR VERY GOOD - Color of spine is slightly faded; spine extremities are mildly compressed and display light abrasion; boards are bright with but negligible wear. Top edge of text-block is rubbed and dye is a bit dulled - else edges clean. / BINDING Solid / INTERIOR The end-papers are toned (a production result). The text is clean and unmarked throughout. / DUST-JACKET GOOD _ There is loss to the head of the spine panel; edges have various small nicks, chipping and tears. The surface of the front and rear panels display brightly. The whole looks decent under a protective, archival mylar cover.
