He offers him a choice of engravings, explaining his constraints; 'Aussi vous savez entre amis et artists un traitement secondaire sera indigne'. There is also Haden had strong connections with France; according to his entry in the Oxford DNB, he completed 'his professional studies in the medical schools of the Sorbonne, Paris, and Grenoble, where he acted as prosecteur in 1839, and, later, lecturer on surgical anatomy at the military hospital'.

He requires 'certain particulars', and will be writing to Oxley regarding 'the ability of the lantern man to obtain fine definition - linear definition I mean'.

He is sending him, 'by the hands of Mr. Chapman the sum of 50 francs wh. I have received on yr. behalf from the authorities of South Kensington Museum and have obtained the promise of this office that yr. Two splendid etchings (the large group of flowers) that he suspended among the Chefs D'Oeuvres of the Establishment.' He concludes: 'Mr. Chapman will explain the hurry in wh. I write'.

He made considerable changes to the plate eventually introducing sheep into the foreground as in this impression.K.M. Guichard in his 'British Etchers 1850-1940' states Haden, who was inspired by Rembrandt 'should be regarded as the founder of the etching movement as we know it . . . His mastery of foliage, water and atmosphere made him universally respected both in England and abroad. He was able to work directly on to the plate, in the open air'.
