Buckden Palace, 12 November 1797. Sir George Pretyman Tomline (1750-1827), tutor of the younger Pitt, and Bishop of Winchester and of Lincoln. "If the Curacy be voidable, I can of course declare it void, & so get rid of him out of my Diocese without any further trouble." The crimes of the Reverend Septimus Hodson are exposed on the website All Things Georgian. Hodson was appointed Chaplain to the Orphan Asylum, Westminster Road, Lambeth. There followed a sorry tale of the seduction of a female orphan singer by "the Reverend Violator". The Ipswich Journal, 14th October 1797, reported that 'The Prince of Wales has commanded that the name of a certain Rev. Seducer be erased from the list of His Royal Highnesses Chaplains' and that he has been 'suffered to resign, in consideration of the services he has rendered to the charity'.

A nice large copy, bound in contemporary (or near contemporary) half black calf by Charles Thurnam of Carlisle, with his tickets (light shelf-wear, scattered light foxing - a little heavier on outer leaves). First Edition. One of Pitt's closest confidants and advisors throughout his life, Tomline was his tutor at Pembroke, and his private secretary at the beginning of his term as prime minister, from 1783 until Pitt secured him his appointment as Bishop of Lincoln in 1787. Tomline attended Pitt on his deathbed, being named his literary executor. Little use was made of Pitt's letters by Tomline in the present memoir, and the public, eagerly expecting a revealing intimate portrait of the statesman, was sorely disappointed by Tomline's circumspection. A third volume, covering the period from 1793 to 1806, was promised and in fact mostly written, but it was never published. The author was an English clergyman, theologian, Bishop of Lincoln and then Bishop of Winchester. Pretyman became tutor (and eventually friend and confidant) to William Pitt the Younger who was sent to Pembroke in 1773. Pitt became Prime Minister of Great Britain in December 1783 and won the 1784 British general election. In 1784, Pretyman was appointed Pitt's private secretary. Pretyman's mathematical ability was soon called upon in advising Pitt on the sinking fund and other technicalities of fiscal policy. In 1785 Pretyman Tomline was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He wrote the Memoir of the Life of the Right Honorable William Pitt, 2 vols.
