De verliezen waren enorm.… De Amerikaanse mariniers verloren in de aanvallen op de eilanden Peleliu en Okinawa alleen al meer dan 14.000 man. Eugene B. Sledge was ooggetuige en vocht mee. Hij kwam in dienst in 1943 en tekende dit persoonlijke verslag over de gevechten, de verschrikkingen en de ontberingen van zichzelf en zijn kameraden. Hij was een van de weinigen die niet gewond of gedood werd. Het persoonlijke verslag van Eugene 'Sledgehammer' in de eerste persoon over deze oorlog, maakte zijn boek tot een bestseller.
