INTRODUCTORY NOTE THE panelled room which forms the subject of this monograph was purchased for the Museum in 1899, and removed from a house in the town of Waltham Abbey. It is now erected at the West End of Gallery No. 2I on the ground floor (No. 2011-1899). The following history of the room has been compiled and the description written by Mr. H. Clifford Smith, M.A., F.S.A., Assistant Keeper in the Department. Mr. A. Van de Put, Deputy Keeper of the Library, has investigated the special problem of the heraldry displayed on several of the panels, and his conclusions are embodied in the text. I have read the proofs. EDWARD F. STRANGE, Keeper of Woodwork.
