Ajouter au panierOctavo, blue cloth (hardcover), black letters, x + 374 pp. Good+, with sunning and wear to spine, lightly rubbed edges. From Introductory Note: Of biographical handbooks of one sort or another there have been many. For the labor movement, the most significant development of modern life, no such reference work has existed. This deficiency the present volume attempts to overcome. Effort has been made to collect the important biographical data on the outstanding figures in trade unionism, labor politics, workers' education, labor defense, cooperation, progressive farmers' groups, and related movements throughout the nation. To the labor movement itself, and to the growing number of its sympathizers and students, such a work should prove of service in manifold ways. Not only is a wealth of fascinating yet elusive information made permanently available; the publication of such a volume also marks a new step in the mental indepenedence and self-consciousness of labor. Finally, in the personal histories of those who have guided the movement from its small beginnings to its present position of influence and power lies a rich fund of inspiration for further progress. Workers' Unions, Labor Movement, Communism, American History, United States History, American Culture.

Ajouter au panierPamphlet. Etat : Good. Trade Edition. This is a small format booklet with self covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The booklet covers have some bumping, rubbing, wear, and at least one tear along with large chips to the back rear corners that has taken off good portions of each. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. "In 1901 Gustave Hervé had attained notoriety with an apparent image of the tricolor planted in a dungpile. Soon he forged a prominent antimilitarist movement called Hervéism. When France's socialist parties united in 1905, Hervé led the most extreme faction. Soon Hervéists created a weekly newspaper, La Guerre sociale, which attempted to unite the extreme French left. Before World War I Hervé was one of the most strident voices within both French socialism and the Second International, advocating violent, revolutionary means to prevent war. Six years of sensational and provocative campaigns and organizations failed to implement his ideas. Despite his dedication, the quixotic Hervé grew frustrated due to continuing leftist divisions. His disillusionment was connected to a rather naive reading of the increasingly anachronistic revolutionary tradition. Hervé was quite sincere, yet his romantic and eclectic socialism exhibited atavistic features. By 1914, he rallied to 'la patrie en danger' and in 1916 changed the name of his paper to La Victoire.
