Alle möglichen Fälle werden von den beiden Nasenlöchern so diskutiert, das jedes eine andere, aber dennoch schlüssige Lösung anbietet. Der Zusatz "aus dem Italiänischen ins Deutsche übersetzt" ist fiktiv. Johann Friedrich Hertel (1667 - 1743) war selbst ein erfolgreicher Jurist: 1701 promovierte er zum Doktor der Rechte und wurde 1703 Hofrat sowie Regierungsadvokat von Sachsen-Weimar. 1706 wirkte er als Advokat am Jenaer Hofgericht. Seit 1732 ordentlicher Professor übernahm er 1736 die Professur des Kodex und der Novellen. The first work is purportedly a translation from the Italian, but in fact written by Hertel, a German jurist and professor of law, the work satirises how under the present legal system cases can be won on 'points' rather than justice being done. Legal questions are presented in the guise of snuff, and each nostril expels a solution to the problem. Both solutions follow an intrinsic logic and are backed up by extensive legal references to standard authorities. Hertel gives over two hundred individual cases, and presents argument and counter-argument for each of them. A large number of his cases cover commercial transactions, especially sales, bad debts, money-lending, interest charges, usury, etc., but also including inheritance cases, mortgage transactions and pawnshop arrangements. The well-written and amusing treatise clearly pinpoints the intricacies of legal argument. The attractive engraved frontispiece shows the figure of justice attended by a fool and a merchant who offers a pinch of snuff." The first part is a political satire (pp. 1-48) and on the general administration of justice.
