The work was first published in an elegant octavo edition in 1626. In the dedication of that edition, Giovanni Battista Spontoni, doctor from Peschieria, claimed to have found the work in his father?s papers. Ciro Spontone (or Spontoni) served as secretary to high-placed dignitaries and diplomats; he wrote serious literary works, and this posthumously published foray into pseudo-science contrasts oddly with the rest of his oeuvre. The Dizionario biografico degli Italiani does not include it among his works. The present economically printed ?popular? edition, whose poor models suffered at the hands of the remarkably unskilled wood engraver, is augmented with a short treatise on other aspects of physiognomy (the nose, the eyebrows, teeth, lips, voice, etc.) for men and women, and chapters on beauty marks and on human proportion. Contiene alcuni degli attacchi pi? irriverenti al famoso teorico fiorentino, spesso citati dagli studiosi del primo antimachiavellismo. Gli insegnamenti Machiavelliani risultano, in quest'opera, tutti nel segno dell'empiet? e di un cinismo senza speranze, di indifferenza al dettato dell'etica e ai precetti della religione cristiana, di un materialismo e di un ateismo manifesti, cosÏ che rendono il segretario fiorentino un personaggio sinistro e maledetto sino a farlo diventare l'oggetto di condanne senza appello.Spontone fu studioso delle opere di Machiavelli e soprattutto del Principe, i Discorsi furono tra le fonti principali del suo precedente trattato filosofico sulle virt? del governante ideale (La Corona del Principe, 1590), anche se mai apertamente riconosciuto come tale; in quell'opera il nome di Machiavelli compare solo una volta, citato con disapprovazione ma senza invettive. Nei Dodici libri del governo di stato, Spontone adotta un approccio pi? severo e teoricamente strutturato alla scienza dello Stato; ad ampio respiro illustra le prerogative dei principi, dei ministeri, degli organi legislativi, dell'esecutivo e delle istituzioni di polizia, istruendo su come preservare la pace ed esaminando le cause e le conseguenze della guerra. Indirizzato ai "principi pi? potenti", Ë un affascinante parallelismo con Il Principe di Machiavelli, pubblicato 60 anni prima; quest'opera Ë apertamente critica nei confronti delle idee di Machiavelli. Contiene alcuni degli attacchi pi? irriverenti al famoso teorico fiorentino, spesso citati dagli studiosi del primo antimachiavellismo. Spontone conosceva bene le opere di Machiavelli. Il Principe e i Discorsi furono tra le fonti principali del suo precedente trattato filosofico sulle virt? del governante ideale (La Corona del Principe, 1590), anche se mai apertamente riconosciuto come tale; in quell'opera il nome di Machiavelli compare solo una volta, citato con disapprovazione ma senza invettive. Nei Dodici libri del governo di stato, Spontone adotta un approccio pi? severo e teoricamente strutturato alla scienza dello Stato, illustrando le prerogative dei principi, dei ministeri, degli organi legislativi, dell'esecutivo e delle istituzioni di polizia, istruendo su come preservare la pace ed esaminando le cause e le conseguenze della guerra. One of the earliest reports of the decisive Battle…of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, which, by the death of Sebastian I, led to the end of the Aviz Dynasty of Portugal and the establishment of the Iberian Union. One of Ciro Spontone's (1554 or 1556-1610) scarcest books, published in 1601, a year after his expedition to Hungary by the side of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, on his crusade against the Turks. Raguaglio fedele discusses the political and military aspects of the Battle of Alcácer Quibir, and is supplemented with astronomical assumptions. The detailed discussion of the battle is illustrated with two double-page engravings, representing accurately the positions of the armies and a later stage of the battle. The Battle of Alcácer Quibir was the major battle of the ongoing Moroccan-Portuguese conflicts, and the Moroccan succession struggle, fought at Ksar-el-Kebir on 4 August 1578. The fight is also known as the Battle of Three Kings, as three rulers led the combatants and died during the conflict, on one side Sebastian, King of Portugal with his ally, the deposed Moroccan Sultan Abu Abdallah Mohammed II, on the other, the new Sultan of Morocco (and uncle of Abu Abdallah) Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik I. The four-hour battle resulted in the total defeat of the Portuguese and Abu Abdallah's army, Sebastian was killed, Abu Abdallah attempted to flee but was drowned in a river, and Abd Al-Malik died from natural causes during the battle. The death of Sebastian was a catalyst for the Portuguese succession crisis. Sebastian's successor, his great-uncle Henry died in 1580, and as neither of them had immediate heirs, ultimately Philip II of Spain gained control of the country, uniting the Portuguese and Spanish Crowns in the Iberian Union. This dynastic union between 1580 and 1640, brought the entire Iberian Peninsula, as well as Portuguese overseas possessions, under the Spanish Habsburg kings, and led to the decline of the Portuguese Empire.
