Janet Mathews' work at the Australian Institute for Australian Studies has been to record and preserve the language, music, and customs of the aboriginal peoples of Australia. Wurley and Wommera is her highly readable, detailed account of the daily life of the Aborigines from the type of huts, or wurleys, that they built, to the family structure, religious beliefs, tools and weapons, including the characteristic spear-grip, wommera. Readers worldwide will see first-hand how these people developed a lifestyle compatible and harmonious with an often harsh and unkind environment- how they hunt and find food, how they travel and track, and how they learned to survive daily on their own resources. Walter Stackpole's black-and-white line drawings add compelling authenticity and visual clarity to this absorbing panorama of Aboriginal tribal life. Walter Stackpool (illustrateur).…
