Ajouter au panierFirst Edition. Quarto. 35cm. Publisher's maroon cloth boards titled in gilt to front board. 46pp. Internally clean, light spotting to prelims, fore-edge untrimmed; Light wear and bumping to extremities, dulling of the cheap gilt, and some darkening and soiling to the cloth; strong and solid, a very good copy. Internally clean with the bookplate of Jim Ellis to the front flyleaf and a florid inscription to the facing blank: "To Jim Ellis from his friend, Jack [G]etrich." A rather typically extravagant collection of stage magic tips, tricks and techniques from Larsen Sr., the father of the intensely prolific William "Bill" Larsen Jr. and the origin of much of his stagecraft and "Impresario to the rich and famous" persona. It's probably fair to say that the Larsen's were one of the USA's most influential and long standing magical dynasties. The recipient is easy enough to identify; Jimmie Ellis, one time President of the Kudner Advertising Agency in New York, single-handedly responsible for the rise of the Buick Automobile Co. and widely acclaimed as a major figure in the 1950's US advertising world. Kudner were solely responsible for Buick advertising throughout the heyday of the company, under Ellis's direction. A life long Republican, Ellis was also instrumental in securing the popular vote for Eisenhower.

Ajouter au panierLimited Edition. No statement of edition or printing; numbered 811 of an unspecified number of copies. Small quarto. Publisher's green cloth, titled in gilt to spine; marbled endpapers; 490pp; illus. A crisp, clean copy, with faint handsoil to binding, just lightly rubbed at board edges and spine ends, very fresh and tight within; Very Good to Near Fine. Laid in (as found) are four leaflets, ca. 1930s, advertising products from the London purveyor of magic props, L. Davenport & Co. We note that there was a simultaneous deluxe issue in red morocco and a locking clasp, uniform with Goldston's other two books in the "Exclusive Secrets" trilogy. This cloth issue, though less elaborate, appears to be the scarcer of the two bindings. A very nice copy of this classic of modern conjuring literature, surprisingly scarce and often found well-worn.

Ajouter au panierGloye, Eugene E. autograph letters, late 1950s to mid 1960s, document the working methods, technical experimentation, and intellectual framework of a mid twentieth century American magician engaged in both performance and psychological analysis of illusion. Written primarily to fellow magician Don Tanner, these letters provide direct evidence of how tricks were conceived, refined, and communicated within professional networks, revealing the intersection of apparatus design, sleight of hand, and audience perception. Gloye?s dual role as performer and psychologist situates the correspondence within broader developments in performance theory and applied psychology, supporting research into the history of magic, entertainment culture, and the study of deception. Archive of sixteen letters spanning approximately the late 1950s through the mid 1960s, containing detailed discussions of trick construction, performance strategy, and experimentation with materials and methods. In a letter dated September 5, 1961, Gloye describes the development of ?Fan Ta Cups,? noting, ?I first got the idea for this cup trick about 14 years ago when I was experimenting with a bill trick which I eventually put on the market? Since I thought of the cup trick at the time of my Fan Ta Bill, I decided it was fitting to call it ?Fan Ta Cups.?? A July 11, 1961 letter discusses the use of hollow plastic golf balls, stating, ?I am convinced that this new golf ball will open up many new trick possibilities. The fact that they come in several colors is also interesting.? In the same September 1961 correspondence, Gloye outlines a constructed hoax involving a variation on the Tip Over Box, explaining his intention of publishing it ?as a lost page from the original book? in imitation of Hoffmann style. Additional letters describe adaptations of existing routines, including a January 31, 1961 explanation of a card forcing method using a modified deck and flap slate, and a February 23, 1961 discussion of alterations to a Head Chopper illusion, including mechanical adjustments and staged comedic effects. Produced during a period of active exchange among professional magicians through correspondence and publications such as The Linking Ring, these letters document how knowledge circulated within specialized communities and how innovation often emerged through incremental modification of established techniques. Gloye?s attention to apparatus construction, coded deception, and audience management reflects broader mid century interest in performance psychology, while his references to collaborators and publication strategies illustrate the role of print culture and informal networks in shaping the field. As a cohesive manuscript archive, the letters preserve the technical language and creative process underlying stage magic, offering a detailed record of mid twentieth century illusion practice. Light wear and handling consistent with age, with legible manuscript throughout; overall condition very good.
