Ajouter au panierTwo books of homilies by Thomas Stapleton (1535-1598), an English Catholic theologian. Both books were published by the same publisher in the same year. Title pages feature the publisher's typical vignette/cut (a woodcut with a figure riding a dragon, surrounded with putti); other pages are decorated with headpieces and initials…. The second book has, in fact, 170 pages (they are incorrectly numbered from p. 2; no page is missing). /// Contemporary leather binding with blind embossing and coloured edges; hardback, [32]+342+[2], [13]+171+[1] pp., 8° (14.5 x 20 cm), leather worn and discoloured (darkened), with tiny cracks, edges faded (colour partly effaced), six leaves (including title leaf) worn and slightly chipped (skilfully fixed by bookbinder; text affected, some words missing; see photo), ca. 100 leaves have pale water stains, some pages slightly foxed, some pages slightly dog-eared, with small smudges etc., other signs of age or wear are quite rare (tiny chips and tears, brown spots), title leaf has 17th-century notes written with pen, its verso has very old ownership stamp, "original" endpapers replaced with new ones (20th century), condition: good Book Language/s: Latin.
