Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. North Carolina holds a special place in the history of moonshine. For more than three centuries, the illicit home-brew was a way of life. NASCAR emerged from the illegal moonshine tradeas drivers such as Junior Johnson, accustomed to running from the law, moved to the racetrack. A host of colorful characters populated the state's bootlegging arena, like Marvin Popcorn Sutton, known as the Paul Bunyan of moonshine, and Alvin Sawyer, considered the moonshine king of the Great Dismal Swamp. Some law enforcement played a constant cat-and-mouse game to shut down illegal stills, while some just looked the other way. Authors Frank Stephenson and Barbara Mulder reveal the gritty history of moonshine in the Tar Heel State. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. From Chowan University to Camp P.D. Hunt Club, Hertford County's storied past is detailed in this photographic history. Situated in Eastern North Carolina, Hertford County is a picturesque locale with an extensive, storied past. Boasting portions of the Chowan and Meherrin River, the area was easily accessible to European explorers, who visited as early at 1586. Education has been an important shaping factor for Hertford residents, as the county has hosted two colleges-Chowan College, founded in 1848, and Wesleyan Female College, founded in 1853. Fishing and hunting are second to none: Camp P.D. Hunt Club is the oldest chartered hunt club in North Carolina and herring fishing was the way of life for many years. Agriculture, too, has been a mainstay for the county's economy, with peanuts and tobacco thriving as staple crops. The county also possesses a unique blend of cultural history, from the Meherrin Native Americans, who moved here from Virginia, to the strong influence of African Americans, who developed Chowan Beach as one of the premier black vacation spots during Segregation. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "With a rat-a-tat pace and a wicked sense of humor, Keller uses the story of Gatling's famous machine gun to take us on an exuberant and entertaining tour through American capitalism in the nineteenth century. This book is a carnival for history buffs - bursting with colorful characters, uncanny connections, and contagious enthusiasm." - Debby Applegate, 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner. "Julia Keller has not only given us the fascinating story of the Gatling gun and its colorful inventor, but has also place it in a valid and original context. She takes us into the middle of nineteenth-century America as it really was: a westward-looking continent packed with dreams, energy, and ambitious practical ideas, a place where mechanical inventions created a vision of limitless power that shaped much of the nation's philosophy and destiny. This is the story of the artfcact as changing history, the early machine gun as bringing about as great a transformation as the simple stirrup did in its era. If you haven't heard of Julia Keller, you'll hear of her now." - Charles Bracelen Flood, author and past president of PEN American Center. "In 1862, with the Civil War lapping at his foorstep, an Indianapolis inventor and businessman named Richard Jordan Gatling created the world's first working machine gun. He naively hoped it would shorten or even eliminate war by reducing the number of soldiers needed to fight. The overwhelming effectiveness of a multiple-firing weapon would, he reasoned, cause opponents to throw in the towel. Instead, it kicked off a worldwide escalation in the armaments business and opened a path toward modern gunnery, one that leads all the way to the AK-47. The Gatling gun was the original weapon of mass destruction. Julia Keller is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who brings her investigative as well as literary talents to this provocative work of American history. As Keller observes, we're a country that thinks it's built on peace and freedom, but has blasted and conquered its way to world domination. Gatling is also a durable American type - a foward-thinking businessman who hawked his goods at state fairs and public lectures, recognized early on the possibilities of the global marketplace, and, step by step, helped propell America onto the world scene. The Gatling gun would paly a vital role in protecting and expanding America's overseas interests. Gatling himself, famous in his own time for creating and improving many industrial desigs, from bicycles and steamship propellers to flush toilets, always maintained that his gun would save lives by decreasing the size of armies. The scientists who unleashed America's atomic arsenal less than a century later would see things much the same way. In Mr. Gatling's Terrible Marvel, Julia Keller offers a riveting account of the Gatling gun's invention, its misunderstood creator, and its tremendous impact on American and world events. She also shows how the gun, in its combination of ingenuity, idealism, and destructive power, perfectly exemplified the paradox of America's rise as a world superpower." - from the inner front jacket flap. Kulick, Gregg (jacket design); Stephenson, Jr., E. Frank (jacket photograph) (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast. …
