Paperback. Etat : Good. It is of great importance, Bart k wrote, that anyone who is involved with music should be able to obtain composers'] works in editions which interpret the author's intentions, not of such kind that may have been arbitrarily modified or forged by some adapter. Bart k's wish has finally been realized in his own work. This collection of early piano music is the second volume in the Bart k Archive Edition, the only edition of the great Hungarian composer to be based on corrections from his memorabilia or original editions in the New York Bart k Archive. Comparison has also been made with Hungarian editions published since 1951, which are based on holdings of the Budapest Bart k Archivum. It is appropriate to continue the Bart k Archive Edition with a second volume of piano music, for, as Grove's Dictionary notes: The pianoforte was his most natural medium of expression. It was the pianoforte that made Bart k express his harmonic thought with such directions. This volume emphasizes Bart k's lifelong work both with East European folk music, and with music for children and student pianists. The 85 short pieces in For Children (1908/9) offer melodies and lyrics from Hungarian and Slovakian folk songs. The piano pieces in this volume and in Series I offer young or beginning pianists material that is at once instructive and eye-opening to the sounds of modern music.Benjamin Suchoff, trustee of the Bart k Estate and professor at the Center for Contemporary Arts and Letters of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, edited this Archive Edition and provided the Introduction, translations of the folk-song texts, and musicological scholarship that will ensure definitive status for this edition. Bart k is a keystone composer of the 20th century, especially for the piano; with this edition, music buyers have the composer's authentic, authoritative last word.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. The Holocaust changed what it means to be a Jew, for Jew and non-Jew alike. Much of the discussion about this new meaning is a storm of contradictions. In The Imaginary Jew, Alain Finkielkraut describes with passion and acuity his own passage through that storm. Finkielkraut decodes the shifts in anti-Semitism at the end of the Cold War, chronicles the impact of Israel's policies on European Jews, opposes arguments both for and against cultural assimilation, reopens questions about Marx and Judaism, and marks the loss of European Jewish culture through catastrophe, ignorance, and clich . He notes that those who identified with Israel continued the erasure of European Judaism, forgetting the pangs and glories of Yiddish culture and the legacy of the Diaspora. Born in Paris in 1949, Alain Finkielkraut is the author of eight books, including The Wisdom of Love (Nebraska 1997). Kevin O'Neill is an associate professor of French at the University of Colorado, Denver. David Suchoff, an associate professor of English at Colby College, is the author of Critical Theory and the Novel: Mass Society and Cultural Criticism in Dickens, Melville and Kafka.…

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Peretz Opoczynski was a journalist who made significant contributions to the Warsaw Ghetto s secret Jewish archive, Oyneg Shabes. Josef Zelkowicz, an ordained rabbi, became a key member of the semi-official archive in the Lo dz Ghetto. While other writers sought to create an objective and dispassionate record of ghetto circumstances, Zelkowicz and Opoczynski chronicled daily life and Jewish responses to the torment of Nazi oppression with powerful immediacy. This is a volume of reportage from occupied Poland produced in the two major Nazi ghettos, Warsaw and Lo dz, by two Yiddish writers schooled in the culture of East European Jewry. Translated by David Suchoff, with an expert and elegant introduction by Samuel Kassow, these profound writings are at last accessible to contemporary readers. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
