Hardcover, two volumes each bound in dark blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine with the words "President's Copy" on the spine of each volume. The cloth covers are very lightly stained. The pagination of each individual issue varies from 40 pages to 158 pages. Volume 19 is illustrated with headpieces and a few maps & portraits. The statement "Mahan Library Naval War college / Newport, Rhode Island" is stamped on the front covers of several of the issues. The volumes have a very slight musty odor and there is some minor foxing to the top edges of the books. Very good. First editions, denoted the "President's Copy" in gilt on the spine. The periodical was published monthly over a period of 10 months, from September to June. John T. "Chick" Hayward (1908-1999). Vice Admiral, United States Navy. A batboy for the New York Yankees baseball team, he started his military career on rocky footing, joining the navy at 15 years old by lying about his age. This after having been expelled from military school for disciplinary reasons. Yet he went on to be promoted to vice admiral in 1959. A navy pilot during World War II, he fought in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea campaigns, his squadron being responsible for numerous kills. He achieved the most flight hours ever attained by a flag officer (13,200 hours). He joined the Manhattan Project in 1944, helping develop the implosion components of the plutonium bomb, and after the war went to Japan to study the after effects on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He was in charge of the first attempt to photograph a nuclear explosion on the Bikini atoll in 1946. He went on to command the first nuclear-powered task force in history, leading the aircraft carrier Enterprise. He served as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode island from 1966 to 1968, and after retiring from the military worked for General Dynamics as vice president for international programs. Vice Admiral Hayward was also responsible for the development of guidance systems for rockets and underwater anti-submarine weapons.
