Paperback. Etat : Good. In a highly awaited new novel, Kate DiCamillo conjures a haunting fable about trusting the unexpected -- and making the extraordinary come true. (Ages 7 and up) What if? Why not? Could it be? When a fortuneteller's tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene knows the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her? The fortuneteller's mysterious answer (an elephant An elephant will lead him there ) sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that you will hardly dare to believe it's true. With atmospheric illustrations by fine artist Yoko Tanaka, here is a dreamlike and captivating tale that could only be narrated by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo. In this timeless fable, she evokes the largest of themes -- hope and belonging, desire and compassion -- with the lightness of a magician's touch. Tanaka, Yoko (illustrateur). …

Hardback. Etat : Fair. A young girl's small but powerful act of heroism during China's "Sparrow War" teaches the value of compassion in this poetic picture book by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sara Pennypacker.   Sparrows were the enemy of farmers. According to the leader of the country, they were eating too much grain, so he announced a great "Sparrow War" to banish them from China.   But Ming-Li didn't want to chase the birds away. As the people of her village gathered with firecrackers and gongs to scatter the sparrows, she watched in dismay.   Quietly, she vowed to save as many sparrows as she could, one by one. Hardback. Etat : Good. This book documents for the first time previously hidden Japanese atrocities in World War II, including cannibalism; the slaughter and starvation of prisoners of war; the rape, enforced prostitution, and murder of noncombatants; and biological warfare experiments. The author describes how desperate Japanese soldiers consumed the flesh of their own comrades killed in fighting as well as that of Australians, Pakistanis, and Indians. Another chapter traces the fate of 65 shipwrecked Australian nurses and British soldiers who were shot or stabbed to death by Japanese soldiers. Thirty-two other nurses, who landed on another island, were captured and sent to Sumatra to become oecomfort women --prostitutes for Japanese soldiers. Tanaka recounts how thousands of Australian and British POWs died in the infamous Sandakan camp in the Borneo jungle in 1945. Those who survived were forced to endure a tortuous 160-mile march on which anyone who dropped out of line was immediately shot. Only six escapees lived to tell the tale. Based on exhaustive research in previously closed archives, this book represents a landmark analysis of Japanese war crimes. The author explores individual atrocities in their broader social, psychological, and institutional milieu and places Japanese behavior during the war in the broader context of the dehumanization of men at war--without denying individual and national responsibility.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Allowed to attend a reception given by one of the directors of her parents' museum, she unexpectedly stumbles across Mr. Tetley of the British Museum - In most unusual circumstances Since Theodosia has last seen him in a showdown in an ancient Egyptian tomb, his reappearance could mean only one thing: the Serpents of Chaos are back. But Theodosia has little opportunity to look for Chaos or ferret out their plans. She's been assigned to catalog the jumble of artifacts down in the catacombs, where some of the most long forgotten, cursed objects lurk. Not until scores of mummies go missing all over London and turn up at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities does Theo realize things are spiraling out of control. Her father falls under suspicion, and Theo struggles to keep him out of jail. Soon her hands are quite full - juggling unwanted mummies, trying to discover what the Serpents of Chaos are up to, and avoiding a bothersome string of governesses. Not only that, but one of her only allies, Sticky Will, seems to have secrets of his own. Once again Theodosia will have to take on secret societies, evil curses, and dark magic too sinister to imagine, especially if it falls into the wrong hands. Blocked at every turn, Theodosia will have to rely on her own skill and cunning - along with a little help from the most unexpected places - to avoid an evil conspiracy that strikes at the very heart of Britain. Tanaka, Yoko (illustrateur).…
