Book is large (340 pp) but tight, square and free of all markings inside other than original owners attractive book plate - Christine Fredrika Bronson. Book has some fading on the front cover but is otherwise Near Fine. Nice frontis of Anne Thackeray Ritchie by John Singer Sargent and previously unpublished line drawings by Thackeray and Lady Ritchie. Now protected with an archival-quality mylar cover.

With plates and illustrations throughout. §The classic library edition of Thackeray reproducng all his illustrations, sometimes within the text, sometimes as full-page plates. Original blue cloth, gilt lettering, gilt and blind decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Occcasional browning to prelims., foxing to fore-edges, the odd external mark or rub. Cup mark to lower board of volume I (vol. I of Vanity Fair); surface damage (sliverfish) towards edge of upper board of volume II (vol. II of Vanity Fair): see separate illustration; small gouge towards foot of spine of volume XVII (The Virginians, vol. II); small white mark near head of spine of volume XXI (Denis Duval) - but a very good set overall, in bright condition: tightly bound, no tears or nicks to spine ends, no slack covers. Her husband, the poet and dramatist, Herman Merivale (1839 1906), moved in literary circles, and was friends with William Makepeace Thackeray. Loosely inserted 'The Cornhill Magazine. November 1919'. pp. 359-468. An article concerning Anne Isabella Thackeray (Lady Ritchie) by Howard Overing Sturgis. Slightly nicked at head and foot of spine, light wear to boards. VG. Light wear and slight rubbing otherwise very good.
