A substantial uniform gathering of seven of Thackeray's principal works. Vanity Fair, the novel that established his reputation, introduced the unforgettable Becky Sharp and remains one of the defining satires of nineteenth-century society; The Newcomes, Pendennis, Henry Esmond, and The Virginians extend Thackeray's characteristic examination of ambition, class, money, and social pretension. The set is particularly appealing for preserving the visual tradition associated with the novels, including both Thackeray's own illustrations and those of Richard Doyle and Frederick Walker. Contents clean and lightly toned, with occasional foxing, mostly on the preliminaries. Contemporary cursive ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of each volume, dated 1872. Bindings remain sound and square. Cloth moderately rubbed at the extremities, with fraying and small losses at the spine heads and tails; corners bumped.
