As a record of the life of an eighteenth-century artist-crafstman it is unique. Long regarded as a minor classic, the book has been through many editions since its first appearance in 1862 - 34 years after Bewick's death. Iaian Bain's introduction, which makes use of hitherto unpublished letters, is accompanied by a helpful exposition of Bewick's methods of engraving and of the printing techniques of the time.
