Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), whose achievement as an artist-engraver is unrivalled to this day, worked virtually all his life in Newcastle, principally as a metal engraver and copper-plate printer.Bewick's delightful Memoir, written at the end of his life provides a remarkable picture of a north-country childhood in Georgian England. As a record of the life of an eighteenth-century artist-crafstman it is unique. Long regarded as a minor classic, the book has been through many editions since its first appearance in 1862 - 34 years after Bewick's death. Iaian Bain's introduction, which makes use of hitherto unpublished letters, is accompanied by a helpful exposition of Bewick's methods of engraving and of the printing techniques of the time. Moreover, the volume is illustrated with fifty of the figures and tail-pieces from Bewick's Quadrupeds and Birds. Illustrated. 258 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
