The Maine Woods is classic Thoreau: a personal story of exterior and interior discoveries in a natural settingall conveyed in taut, masterly prose. Thoreau's evocative renderings of the life of the primitive forestits mountains, waterways, fauna, flora, and inhabitantsare timeless and valuable on their own. But his impassioned protest against the despoilment of nature in the name of commerce and sport, which even by the 1850s threatened to deprive Americans of the "tonic of wildness," makes The Maine Woods an especially vital book for our own time. Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 May 6, 1862) was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. A leading transcendentalist, he is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument in favor of citizen disobedience against an unjust state. Herbert Wendell Gleason (June 5, 1855 1937) was a photographer in the United States. The Concord Free Public Library has 700 of his negatives. The Whitney Museum of American Art has nine of his photographs. The Getty Museum has six of his photographs. He was born in Malden, Massachusetts. He was in Williams College class of 1877. He graduated from Andover Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1882. He married Lulie Wadsworth Rounds in 1883. He became a Congregational minister before transitioning to become a photographer. He did landscape photography of National Parks traveling with John Muir and Stephen Mather. From 1899 to 1934 he photographed the American West, missions in California, Luther Burbank's horticultural experiments, mansions and formal gardens on the east coast, Boston's Arnold Arboretum, flowers in the wild and in gardens, the Canadian Rockies, and National Parks including Yosemite National Park. He also photographed Alaska, Minnesota, Native Americans, commercial, and industrial subjects. Roland Wells Robbins (19081987) was an American archaeologist, author, and historian who is known for discovering the site of Henry David Thoreau's house at Walden Pond. His other discoveries include the Saugus Iron Works and the John and Priscilla Alden Family Sites. On July 4, 1945, the 100th anniversary of Henry David Thoreau's first day at Walden Pond, Robbins decided to look for the site of Thoreau's cabin. He used Walden and notes on the house by William Ellery Channing as a reference. On November 12, 1945, he located the chimney foundations of Thoreau's house in Concord, Massachusetts. He began lecturing on his discovery and documented it in his book Discovery at Walden. In 1964, Robbins reproduced Thoreau's cabin in his backyard and opened the building to the public. Robbin's replica was visited by hundreds of people, including P. B. Gajendragadkar and Toshi and Pete Seeger. Robbins also discovered the sites of the John and Priscilla Alden home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, the remains of Thomas Jefferson's birthplace in Shadwell, Virginia, Fort Crown Point, Sterling Iron Works in Tuxedo, New York, duPont's Powder Rolling Mills in Wilmington, Delaware, the Sleepy Hollow Restorations in Tarrytown, New York, Samuel Parris's parsonage in Danvers, Massachusetts, John Winthrop Jr. Iron Furnace Site in Quincy, Massachusetts, mill sites in Moore State Park, and a Revolutionary War encampment site on Talcott Mountain. In 1967 he was commissioned by the town of Middleboro, Massachusetts, to clear and restore the Oliver Mills. In 1947, Robbins purchased 1,230 negatives of Herbert W. Gleaso.
