Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. TITMARSH, M. A. [pseud. THACKERAY, William Makepeace]. The Rose and the Ring; or, The History of Prince Giglio and Prince Bulbo. A Fire-Side Pantomime for Great and Small Children. London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1855. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with eight full-page wood engravings, including the frontispiece, together with a vignette title page and numerous illustrations in the text, after drawings by the author. Small octavo, iv, 128, 16 pp., publisher's catalogue advertising: The Rose and the Ring, and the third edition of The Kickleburys on the Rhine. Publisher's original rose-colored pictorial paper-covered boards printed in red, with cloth spine and yellow glazed endpapers. Printed by Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars. Housed in a folding chemise with ribbon pull and a red morocco and cloth slipcase. The case spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration, and "London, 1855" at the foot. The Rose and the Ring is the last of Thackeray's Christmas books, written and illustrated by the author and published under his pseudonym, Mr. M. A. Titmarsh; it was published for Christmas 1854 with an 1855 title-page date. The story developed from Twelfth-Night character drawings made to entertain children in Rome. "A fire-side pantomime for great and small children." A satirical fairy tale of rival princes, disputed thrones, and romantic misunderstandings, it follows Princes Giglio and Bulbo through adventures involving Fairy Blackstick and a magical rose and ring that make their possessors irresistibly attractive. Beneath the comedy lies a satire on vanity, social rank, and appearances. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with spotting and light foxing. Binding is sound and square. Original boards moderately to heavily rubbed and worn, particularly at the extremities and corners. Chemise and slipcase in Very Good condition. A Good First Edition in the original pictorial boards. New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1851. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Includes "An Essay on Thunder and Small Beer," the preface originally added to the second London edition of 1851, containing Thackeray's spirited response to an unfavorable review in The Times. Duodecimo; . 69, [3] pp., the final three pages comprising publisher's advertisements. Original pictorial paper wrappers; stitched, with both front and rear wrappers retained. Published under the pseudonym Mr. M. A. Titmarsh, with Thackeray's own name also given on the title page, this first American edition is an uncommon survival in original pictorial wrappers, with unopened leaves. The advertisements promote Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale; The Count of Monte Cristo; and Genevieve by Alphonse de Lamartine. One of Thackeray's Christmas books, this comic travel narrative follows Lady Kicklebury and her family on a Continental journey along the Rhine. Their encounters with fellow travelers expose their social ambitions, snobbery, and matrimonial schemes through the amused observations of Mr. M. A. Titmarsh. Contents clean and unmarked, complete and with UNOPENED leaves. An old historical society stamp to the front wrapper; slight wear at the spine ends. Binding sound and square. Original wrapper spine with wear and chipping; mild wear to page edges; covers gently rubbed. A Very Good minus First American edition in original pictorial wrappers.
