Ajouter au panierEtat : Very Good. First edition. 8vo, 54, [2] pp. (7.5 by 5.5".) With 16 hand-colored plates with illustrations by Thackeray. With bookplate of Henry Van Duzer, the Thackeray scholar and bibliographer who wrote "The Thackeray Library", the standard reference on Thackeray. Housed in a stunning custom full morocco box which functi…ons similar to a type of cigar box in which the top half or lid is pulled away. In this case it reveals an inner lining of leather. Within this box the book is contained in a custom folio. The publisher's boards, with illustrated paper pasted onto the boards, has considerable dust soilage, but it is all present and seldom encountered fully preserved as it is with this copy. The folio that acts as the first outer lining has closed tears along edges and rubbing with losses to the green cloth. One edge (the bottom side) is missing. Still, it still functions as a protective layer and is an attractive feature. The leather box itself has a strip of sunned area on the front board but is otherwise in fine condition. The book itself has a few fox marks but overall is clean and handsome. In sum, this is a singular copy, both because of the entire package and because of its provenance. Full Morocco Box housing book with publisher's pastedown paper over boards.

Ajouter au panierLondon: Smith, Elder & Co. 1851. Square 8vo. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled edges; pp. [iv], 87, title with tinted lithographic vignette, tinted lithographic frontispiece and 13 tinted lithographic plates, all by Thackeray; light wear to extremities, spine a little sunned an…d with hinges weakened at head; internally, apart from very light marginal toning a clean and fresh copy; provenance: contemporary Glasgow bookseller's label inside front cover, contemporary engraved armorial bookplate C. J. Tennant Dunlop underneath.Second edition of a delightful social satire about the English travelling to and along the Rhine. The critic for The Times launched a rather strongly worded attack on this book in his 1850 review, criticising the author's motives in writing for profit (a charge Thackeray happily accepted) and for presenting rather unsavoury characters. Ironically the first edition sold out on review day and this second edition was hastily arranged by the publishers.
