Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. Author: Cicero, Marcus Tullius; translated by Sir Roger L'Estrange Title: Tully's Offices, in Three Books. Turned out of Latin and into English. By Sr. Ro. L'Estrange. The Fourth Edition Corrected. To which is Added a Table. Publication Details: London: Printed for R. Bentley, J. Hindmarsh and J. Tonson,…1688. Fourth Edition, corrected. 12mo. [10], 260, [18] pp. With an additional engraved title/frontispiece. Wing C4312; ESTC R23710. Description: A scarce late seventeenth-century English edition of Cicero's De Officiis, translated by Sir Roger L'Estrange. This is the fourth corrected edition of L'Estrange's influential English rendering of Cicero's celebrated work on duty, ethics, public conduct and moral philosophy. The volume retains the striking additional engraved title/frontispiece, dated 1688, showing an allegorical architectural composition with figures and inscriptions. The printed title page reads Tully's Offices, in Three Books. Turned out of Latin into English and confirms the fourth corrected edition with an added table. The translation by Sir Roger L'Estrange first appeared in 1680 and became one of the important English versions of Cicero's ethical treatise in the later seventeenth century. Bibliographical records confirm this 1688 issue as the fourth edition, printed for R. Bentley, J. Hindmarsh and J. Tonson. Binding: Contemporary or near-contemporary full calf, with raised bands to spine, gilt rules and red morocco title label lettered in gilt "TULLY'S OFFICES." Condition: Good. Contemporary full calf binding showing considerable age-related rubbing, scuffing and surface wear, with areas of leather loss at the spine ends, joints and board edges. The spine retains its raised bands, gilt rules and red morocco title label lettered in gilt "TULLY'S OFFICES." Despite the external wear, the binding remains very tight and the text block is firmly held. The front hinge is loose but remains fully attached. Internally, the leaves show expected age-toning, occasional staining and handling marks consistent with a volume printed in 1688. The additional engraved title/frontispiece is present and well preserved. Early manuscript and later pencil/ink annotations are present to the endpapers, which also show age-related staining and wear. Overall, a sound and firmly bound copy despite the visibly worn contemporary calf, with the principal structural defect being the loose but fully attached front hinge.
