This book is an edited version of the LAMS-2532 report written in 1946 and 1947 originally titled Manhattan District History: Project Y, The Los Alamos project. Some material has been declassified since the original 1947 edition was been added. Original factual material has not been changed. This volume tells an important part of the story of one of the greatest scientific achievements in history-the story of the founding of the Laboratory at Los Alamos through the successful completion of its secret mission to create the first atomic bomb. The celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the Laboratory provides an appropriate occasion to reprint this important and significant historical report, compiled in 1947, from internal documents. Few individuals, even those who are knowledgeable about that early era, will read this work without feeling a sense of profound discovery at the importance of those daily events which led to the most dramatic technological development of this century. The United States and the free world in general, owe a great debt to those who, prior to World War II, saw that science and technology could be vital for the preservation of freedom. It was such a group that assembled at Los Alamos. Science and technology have long shaped the outcome of international conflicts, domestic policies, and society in general. Sticker of Los Alamos Historical Society Museum Shop inside front cover. Minor erasure residue on title page. Edith Truslow (1911-2002) was a lieutenant in the Women's Army Corps (WACs) when she was offered a job at Los Alamos as a historian in 1946. During her time at Los Alamos she co-wrote the history of Los Alamos with David Hawkins and Ralph C. Smith. She was credited as one of the co-authors of Project Y: The Los Alamos Story, in 1984 when the history was declassified and published. After she finished her work at Los Alamos, she became a civilian professional photographer. This volume of the Manhattan Engineer District History gives a concise account of the nonscientific part of the Y Project at Los Alamos from its inception through 1946 when the Atomic Energy Commission assumed control. The purpose of this record is to present the facts of Construction, organization, and personnel and of various problems faced and met by those responsible for assisting in the final accomplishment of the task set for Los Alamos. One of the chief difficulties in security data for this volume arose from security restrictions during the early operations of the Project. Many of the transactions wee carried on orally to ensure secrecy, and so no written record was preserved. In other instances, data were destroyed to further protect the secret of the bomb. This complete secrecy was one of the most amazing aspects of the entire program, but it produced one of the greatest obstacles to piecing the story together for historical purposes. Many involved were interviewed to fill in these gaps.
