The history of India, so far, has not focused on a civilizational Bharatiya perspective, emphasizing a geo-political history based on the Nation-state paradigm, rather than a geo-cultural practice based on India's civilizational antiquity. Until recently, history had been viewed from various ideological lenses- Colonial, Nationalist, Marxist, Subaltern, soon and so forth. These schools have been immensely successful not only in tapping the immense range of sources and exploring the various regions and sub-regions across the subcontinent but have also contributed towards bringing to light important perspectives concerning the political, economic, social and cultural developments in the history of India from the 8th to the 14th centuries. While tapping into these schools has its obvious advantages, in that they have focused on partial aspects of the grand march of the civilization's history, a lot still needs to be done.

This book presents the socio-cultural and historical trajectories of the Deccan plateau as well as the coastal areas of the current states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. It studies the art of diplomacy by discussing the diplomatic relations between the Marathas and various European companies, as well as the indigenous regional states. The author also probes into the Maratha naval policy, the evolution of a composite Deccani culture and the cultural flux that was taking place within the Maratha country. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the volume examines how caste and gender relations operated, how the idea of dissent was generated as well as the socio-political impact of various linguistic, ethnic and religious groups. Through a study of monuments, sculpture and paintings prevalent in the region, the book also discusses the developments in art and architecture in the Deccan.Rich in archival sources, this book is a must read for scholars and researchers of Indian history, colonial history, South Asian history, Maratha history and history in general. Neuware -The representation of the ¿History of the Marathas¿ through varied historiographic representations has focused around the colonial discourses of the English East India Company in matters related to politics, diplomacy & interdependency in Deccan all through the 17th and 18th centuries. The gradual rise of the Maratha state under Chhatrapati Shivaji had a bearing on the politics and diplomacy across all the European powers in the Indian subcontinent, viz. the Portuguese, the Dutch, the English and the French right from its inception. The 17th, 18th century in Indian history were a precursor to the developments of the 19th century. It can be seen as a marker for Deccan as longue durée since Deccan in the 17th and 18th century saw marked changes in terms of economic structures, diplomatic policies, etc., with the rise of the Marathas. The European Companies also brought about such changes to the Indian sub-continent in terms of social and cultural policies that over the years it became the new order. The process of acculturation did not happen overnight, it was a process of slow gradual change as the change of mentalities, traditions and customs was a process of contest & conciliation.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 120 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The 17th & 18th centuries witnessed a period of mercantilism, saw the various interlopers of the European Companies taking part in the profitable Asiatic trade and gradually participated in creating trading posts in India in which the Western and Eastern Coasts of Deccan virtually became the nodal points for trade, commerce and investments in the world trade. Deccan was transforming into an inclusive economy, creating different, fairly open, assimilating, cosmopolitan cultures and communities. Gradually, during the eighteenth century, it also found an outlet in banking, which grew increasingly important in sustaining the new 'mercantilist' indigenous states: the Marathas, Tanjore, Mysore, Hyderabad, Arcot, et al. Deccan became that part of the structure in which the survival of trade depended. France, primarily a trading nation, latter turned to carve out colonies for itself, at a juncture when the total political condition in India was on the verge of chaos, under such circumstances France was trying to establish her lost glory and at least regain an equal footing with her European competitor, England. This series attempts to provide a glimpse of this untraversed period.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 184 pp. Englisch.
