On the subject of tragedy there is in fact some need for a candid guide. Here is a passage from the opening pages of the book that describes the nature of the problem that confronts the reader who seeks enlightenment:".In our day the Greek tragedies are chiefly read in translation, and translation, it goes without saying, is at best a dubious transaction. In the case of the most brilliant versions, the creative talents of the translator are normally in evidence to the point where we may safely assume that what is offered in a modern tongue is virtually a modern poem. Of the various translations available in English, each bears the distinguishing mark of its time and author. The best are truly admirable works of art. None succeeds in conveying the tone, or even the sense, of the original Greek. If, in translation, Greek tragedy nevertheless makes a convincing impression it must be because in spite of everything it is impossible to suppress the universality of its conception. Every age arranges the world in accordance with its lights; but essentially the furniture of the universe remains the same. The stuff out of which the Greek poets made tragedy has changed, certainly, in the course of the years. The tragic myths do not speak to us with the authority they had in the days of their currency, but as symbols of what goes on in the human soul they serve their turn as well as ever. Their sound, it is true, is now no more than a whisper. But there is no need for them to shout."
