They offer a glimpse into the literary culture of 18th century Portugal and explore the themes of love, loss, and the human condition through the lens of a traditional poetic form…. The author's mastery of the sonnet is evident in his skillful use of rhyme and meter, as well as his ability to convey complex emotions with elegance and concision. Soft cover. Etat : As New. ~ A profusely illustrated catalog of the exhibition held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, from February 3 to June 5, 2017. The essays in this catalog are a very important contribution to the renewal of the research on Almada Negreiros oeuvre, and to the studies that, based on his work, poin…t toward the Modernity movement as a mixture of different ideas about the modern. The texts focus on the artist, his visual work and his written production within the political and cultural context of the 20th century, discussing the complexity and eclecticism both of Almada's work and environment, integrating the former in the broad debate on modernity and the various Modernisms. Lastly, a chronology put together by Luis Manuel Gaspar provides an in-depth view of Almada's artistic career. The catalogue is structured in nine sections of images, each one clarified by a brief introductory text. The aim of this structure, however, is not to confine the pieces within a rigid classificatory scheme, but rather to allow a level of fluidity and communication between them. There are specific catalog entries, which impart recent researches, new information or revised perspectives on the work, or group of works, they comment on. The catalog entries were composed by Mariana Pinto dos Santos, Carlos Bártolo, Begoña Farré Torras, Marta Soares, Cátia Mourão, Ana Vasconcelos, Pedro Freitas and Simão Palmeirim Costa ~ Publishers' wrappers ~ 423p ~ 29x24x4cm. ~ As New ~ Extremely heavy and oversized item, circa 2.5 Kg. " Brutos penhascos, rústicas montanhas, Medonhos bosques, hórrida maleza, Que me vedes, coberto de tristeza, Saudoso habitador destas campanhas. Para me suavizar mágoas tamanhas, Alteremos um pouco a Natureza; Civilize meu mal vossa dureza, Barbarizai-me vós estas entranhas. (Wikipedia) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paulino António Cabral de Vasconcelos (Amarante, 6 May 1719 - 20 November 1789), better known as Abade de Jazente, was a Portuguese poet. His father was a doctor and, when he was a widow, he took sacred orders, being appointed Notary of the Holy Office, in Porto by provision of July 1, 1735. On April 27, 1731, as a boy, he requested Minor Orders. Later, around 1735, he went to Coimbra to attend the Canon course, having formed a "nemine discrepante", on June 17, 1741. "Rough cliffs, rustic mountains, hideous woods, humid maleness, That you see me, covered with sadness, Longing inhabitant of these campaigns. To soothe me with such big hurts, Let's change Nature a little; Civilize my evil, your hardness, Barbarize me these insides. My weeping moves you with some affection Of mild compassion; because of wickedness He always finds a hard object in you. () "- Abbot de Jazente - Sonnet In 1748, he was appointed Coadjutor of the Abbot of Jazente, Caetano de Azevedo Pereira, who was ill. The abbey was vacant due to his death, being put up for competition on October 10, 1752. Paulino was chosen as abbot of the parish church of Santa-Maria-de-Jazente, of the Sobretâmega region, a league from Amarante and very close to the his native land, by order of October 26, 1752, of D. Frei José Maria da Fonseca and Évora OFM, who was then Bishop of Porto. In Jazente, he was a rural owner and, from time to time, went to Porto to escape the village environment, attending the Episcopal Palace and enjoying the favors and friendship of the Bishop. On January 21, 1784, already quite ill and forced, he became a resignatory Abbot and went to live in Amarante, in the so-called "Rua da Portela" (now Rua Doutor Miguel Pinto Martins), with his income greatly reduced, to 195 réis which were paid to him by his successor in Jazente, Abbot José Luis de Queirós. In addition to being religious, he wrote poetry. He is a character in the historical novel "Um Motim há Cem Anos", by Arnaldo Gama. (Translated by Google using the portuguese Wikipedia-article).
