Depuis son couvent de Beja, une jeune religieuse franciscaine portugaise, Mariana Alcoforado, adresse entre décembre 1667 et juin 1668 cinq lettres d?amour débordantes de passion et de désespoir à un officier français, le marquis de Chamilly, qui l?a séduite puis abandonnée. Exprimant tous les stades successifs d?un amour ardent et d?une élévation spirituelle par lesquels passe la narratrice, ces lettres entrent en possession d?un diplomate, le vicomte Gabriel de Guilleragues, qui les traduit en français sous le titre de "Lettres portugaises" et les fait publier en janvier 1669 chez le libraire Barbin, sans nom d?auteur. Tenues pour d?authentiques lettres écrites par Mariana à son amant, elles connaissent un immense succès et contribuent à faire avancer la carrière de Guilleragues qui devient Secrétaire du Roi puis Ambassadeur en Turquie avant de diriger la "Gazette de France". Trois siècles plus tard, des chercheurs ont pu établir avec certitude que les lettres d?amour aussi lyriques que passionnées de la religieuse portugaise sont en réalité une ?uvre de fiction, un roman épistolaire écrit par Guilleragues lui-même, même si certains auteurs contemporains se disent aujourd?hui encore convaincus de leur authenticité. Les Lettres portugaises constituent un exemple remarquable du roman épistolaire du XVIIe siècle. À travers cinq lettres passionnées, la narratrice exprime les tourments de l'amour non réciproque, oscillant entre espoir, désespoir et résignation. L'?uvre explore les thèmes de la passion, de la trahison et de la solitude, offrant une introspection profonde dans l'âme d'une femme abandonnée. Bien que présentées initialement comme authentiques, ces lettres sont désormais reconnues comme une création littéraire de Guilleragues, illustrant la capacité de la fiction à émouvoir et à tromper le lecteur par son réalisme émotionnel. Gabriel-Joseph de Lavergne, vicomte de Guilleragues (1628?1685), était un diplomate, écrivain et journaliste français. Il est principalement connu pour les Lettres portugaises, publiées anonymement en 1669. Guilleragues a également servi comme secrétaire du roi Louis XIV et a été ambassadeur en Turquie. Son ?uvre a marqué la littérature française par sa profondeur émotionnelle et son style épistolaire innovant.
