Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Very Good. Not Stated (illustrateur). First edition. A first English edition of this heavily illustrated work of military history by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The first English edition of the work, originally published as Histoire d'une Fortresse in 1874.In the original pictorial red cloth binding.Although Viollet-le-Duc is famed for his restoration of some of the most prominent medieval landmarks in France, including the Notre-Dame de Paris and Mont Saint-Michel, the architect had a second career in the military, primarily defending Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. He was so influenced by the conflict that in this later work, he describes an idealised defence of France through the analogy of the military history of Le Roche-Pont, an imaginary castle. The book influenced French military defensive thinking, and his critique of the effect of artillery describes the principles applied to the defence of France until World War II.Illustrated with a frontispiece, 11 plates, and in text illustrations throughout. Collated, complete.Translated by Benjamin Bucknall. With 40 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading to spine, with bumping to the head and tail. Cloth split to tail of front joint, and to head of rear joint. Light marks to boards. Burn & Co binders sticker to rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with light spotting to the front and rear. Very Good. book.
