The book contains a fairly detailed though, of course, incomplete reference list, which may help to satisfy the reader who wishes to investigate anyone question in its entirety. The book opens with a review of the well-known aspects of magnetism of the elementary particle that was discovered first, the el…ectron (Chapter 1). This is followed by a brief summary of data concerning the magnetic properties of atomic electron shells (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 is devoted to the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei and their constituent nucleons-the proton and the neutron. It also contains a description of the most important experimental techniques of determining the magnetic moments of nuclei and nucleons (detailed tables of measured magnetic moments are given in the Appendix at the end of the book). Chapter 4 deals with the problem of the anomalous magnetic moment of an elementary particle and with the relation of this problem to the quarks hypothesis. Chapter 5 offers a fairly detailed description of the situation arising from the Dirac hypothesis concerning the magnetic monopole. Finally, Chapter 6 gives a very brief presentation of non-linear magnetic effects in strong fields.

Rather than use a deductive method of exposition, the authors consider and analyze simple empirically established properties of s…olids and employ more complicated models only as the need arises. Detailed treatment is given of classical problems such as chemical bonding in crystals, the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential, the metal-insulator criterion, and the quantum theory of band electron motion in external fields. Consideration is also given to topical problems such as neutron scattering by the crystal lattice, plasma and Fermi liquid effects, the theory of disordered systems, and the polaron. The reader is expected to know only the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and statistical physics. Compared with the Russian edition (Nauka, Moscow 1983), the book has been substantially revised and enlarged, new sections have been written and recent results have been incorporated.

There have been a number of excellent textbooks available on the phenomenon of superconductivity, which describe in detail the variety of ef fects connected with it…and the mathematical techniques to deal with them properly. However, until now there has not been a textbook available in English which concentrates on the mate~ial aspects of superconductivity. This is a major shortcoming since most physicists working in the field of superconduc tivity are mainly concerned with specific materials and subsequently often need to know more about the interplay of superconductivity and material prop erties. On the other hand, people working in the field know that a competent and well-written book by S. V. Vonsovsky, V. A. Izyumov, and E. Z. Kurmaev has been available in Russian. It presents a thorough discussion of superconducting transition-metal alloys and compounds. This volume is a translation of an updated version of the Russian edition. The translation was done by A. P. Zavarnitsyn of the authors' institution and by Dr. E. H. Brandt of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung in Stuttgart. The master manuscript was ably typed by Mrs. C. Pendl. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of them. I sincerely hope that the book will turn out to be useful to physicists working in the field of superconductivity as well as to nonspecialists and interested graduate students.
