Short foreword about the Outdoor Circle's history. Edithe Beutler was born in 1892. After a divorce from a popular stage magician (Alfred Edgar Bogdon), she raised two children by opening a studio for coloring photographs using oil pigments -- first in San Francisco. She moved on to Hollywood, where her daughter (Sally Phipps ) had a career as an actress in films during the Silent Era. Beutler moved on to Hawaii where her artisic achievement found focus and her lasting legacy remains. A biography of Beutler and a tribute volume -- 'Edithe Beutler: Beautifying Hawaii with Color' was published at the beginning of 2025. The original images the Edithe Beutler sold still circulate among avid collectors. This 1944 volume was apparently also available in a paper binding.
