This is a nice book with fraying at corners and spine with several 1in spine tears, light sunning on spine and along top board edge. Interior has light page toning, missing title pg, previous owner's nameplate on front pastedown, and light edgewear to ffep & half-title pg. Binding is shaken and cracking at four places. Beautiful color illustrations by M.B. de Monvel, but some images appear to have been cut out, and on page 22, the music notes are scraped away. Mild soiling to spine with some stains to cover, with endpapers darkened.

Inspiration for his work came from the theaters of children which he framed with a decorative element. The book was originally published in 1884 following the first publication of E. Plon, "Nourrit et Cie Vieilles chansons et danses pour les petits enfants" in 1883. Very nice copy despite tiny closed tears and corner chips/unraveling to the cloth covers. book.

Gorgeous color illustrations by the influential (Maurice Sendak was a fan) artist Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913) throughout. In very good plus condition. Previous owner's name written on the front loose end page. No other ownership marks/writing present within. Interior pages bright. Front hinge cracked but holding firmly to the book block. Light edge wear/tear/bumping/offsetting to the cloth covers. A very handsome copy.
