Wegemann (1879-1952) started working for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a geologist in 1907. He eventually worked for the National Park Service. While working for the USGS he made important scientific discoveries and contributed to geological sciences by authoring various papers, pamphlets, and other types of publications. His career as a regional and petroleum geologist gave him opportunities to travel domestically and internationally. He participated extensive geological studies in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and the greater Intermountain West. Wegemann photographs are rare.
