The analysis is based on the linearized relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system with the unperturbed state assumed to be isotropic but not necessarily Maxwellian. The expansion parameter is ne /c where ve is the electron thermal speed. It is assumed that the wave frequency, plasma frequency, and cyclotron frequency are all comparable in magnitude, and the refractive index n is O(1). The parameter a n /n is of arbitrary order, and the results are uniformly valid for all values of oblique propagation angles, although the relativistic effects are negligible for small angles. The dielectric tensor is reordered, and the dispersion relation appropriate for this problem is derived to the lowest significant order in n. The results are expressed in terms of the readily calculable (generalized) plasma dispersion function Z. In the Maxwellian case the results are algebraic in Z, and unlike the previously published results, they do not involve infinite integrals or series imposed on Z, thus leading to simple and efficient evaluations. The case of perpendicular propagation is obtained by taking the large a limit. The results resolve some inconsistencies in the literature dealing with the extraordinary mode. This book explores the complex dynamics of tokamak states with flow, a crucial aspect of understanding and simulating plasma behavior in nuclear fusion research. The author delves into the intricate interplay of various forces within these systems, including viscosity, electrical conductivity, and the Hall effect. The book's approach involves a systematic expansion based on the relative magnitude of different transport coefficients, allowing for a clearer understanding of the underlying physics. This analysis, rooted in the principles of single-fluid magnetohydrodynamics, provides a framework for simulating long-term tokamak behavior. The author highlights the significance of large toroidal flow and its influence on diffusion, a topic of significant interest in the field of fusion research. Through a series of mathematical derivations, the book explores the impact of these forces on the evolution of plasma profiles over time. The text further emphasizes the importance of incorporating a general viscous tensor in the model, accounting for the unique characteristics of plasma behavior in strong magnetic fields. By combining a rigorous mathematical approach with a clear focus on experimental relevance, the book offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of tokamak states with flow, paving the way for further advancements in the pursuit of controlled nuclear fusion. This book delves into the complex world of wave propagation in plasmas, a topic that has fascinated scientists since the study of radio waves in the ionosphere. The author goes beyond the common approximations used in this field, such as geometric optics and plane stratified medium models, to examine the fundamental equations governing wave behavior in a cold plasma. The book uses electromagnetic potentials to formulate the problem, resulting in a sixth-order system of partial differential equations. These equations reveal intriguing properties of wave propagation in plasmas, including transitions from elliptic to hyperbolic behavior at key resonance surfaces like the lower and upper hybrid resonances, and at the ion and electron cyclotron resonances. These transitions, which are uncommon in other areas of physics, highlight the unique nature of waves in plasmas. The author also explores the implications of these transitions for energy absorption and heating within the plasma. The book then delves into the specific case of wave propagation in axisymmetric plasmas, simplifying the problem to a fourth-order system. This investigation into the axisymmetric equilibrium case allows the author to explore wave propagation at frequencies near both the ion cyclotron frequency and the ion plasma frequency. The book concludes with an in-depth analysis of wave propagation near the lower hybrid resonance surface. The author distinguishes between two scenarios: one where the resonance surfaces coincide with flux surfaces, leading to heating along the entire resonance surface, and another where they do not coincide, resulting in heating only at points of tangency between the surfaces. This book provides a rigorous exploration of wave propagation in plasmas, offering a deeper understanding of the complex phenomena at play and providing valuable insights for the field of plasma physics. Analyze the effects of tied magnetic lines in ideal magnetohydrodynamics, the book presents a clear solution to the simple problem of the reflection of an initial point disturbance from a conducting wall in two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics linearized about a constant state. It assumes the unperturbed magnetic field in the x direction, with field lines tied to the conducting wall. The author separates the solution into three parts: the ordinary wave generated by a point disturbance at the initial coordinate, a reflected wave, and an uncentered wave. The reflected wave is centered at the image point while the uncentered wave has non-self-similar wave fronts. This book describes line singularities, lacunae, and the nature of singularities at wave fronts. The author ultimately shows that tied lines have a fundamentally different structure than untied lines, providing a concrete comparison for stability analyses of various configurations. This intriguing book explores the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field, using repeated canonical transformations of a Hamiltonian system. The author, a distinguished researcher in the field, presents an accessible and thorough examination of this fundamental problem in plasma physics. Building on earlier work, the author develops a systematic perturbation procedure that preserves the Hamiltonian character of the system, allowing for the elimination of degrees of freedom and the study of the simpler motion of guiding centers. The analysis reveals the existence of adiabatic invariants, which simplify the study of particle dynamics and provide insights into the long-time behavior of charged particles in magnetic fields. The research presented in this book contributes to our understanding of the behavior of charged particles in magnetic fields, which is crucial for advancing fields such as magnetic fusion energy research and plasma physics. The author focuses specifically on the behavior of waves as they encounter ion cyclotron resonance layers, regions where the wave frequency aligns with the natural frequency of ions in a magnetic field. This research is crucial to understanding how plasmas respond to external energy, particularly in the field of plasma heating, which is a critical process for harnessing the power of fusion energy. Building upon earlier work on electron cyclotron harmonics, the author utilizes boundary layer analysis, a mathematical technique that examines the behavior of a system near a point of dramatic change. This approach provides a deeper understanding of wave propagation than traditional geometrical optics, which often breaks down near resonance layers. The book examines the wave interactions at various harmonic resonances, including the fundamental resonance and the ion-ion hybrid resonance, revealing the intricate interplay between wave energy, mode conversion, reflection, and absorption within these layers. The authorââ â¢s exploration is rich with theoretical proofs of reciprocity relations, which describe the symmetry of wave propagation regardless of the direction of incidence. These proofs provide a foundation for understanding the general principles of wave interaction in plasmas, and the book further presents numerical results illustrating the behavior of wave propagation under different conditions. Ultimately, this book offers a powerful framework for understanding the fundamental processes of wave propagation in plasma physics, paving the way for more efficient and effective methods of plasma heating in the quest for controlled fusion energy.
