Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a new interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello, arguing that the play is not a story of crude and gross jealousy but a complex exploration of sexual honor and racial prejudice. The author argues that Shakespeare used the conventions of the mystery play to depict a marriage that is chaste and spiritual, despite the racial difference between the couple. This interpretation sheds new light on the play's characters and themes, revealing the author's deep understanding of human nature and the complexities of race and gender in Elizabethan England. Through a close analysis of the play's text and historical context, this book offers a compelling re-evaluation of one of Shakespeare's most enduring and enigmatic works. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardcover. First Edition. Small 8vo. Quarter ivory cloth with paper spine label and tan paper over boards. vii, 337pp, (1p ad). Frontispiece. Very good. Binding typically age toned, soiled and mildly edgeworn, with spine lightly shellacked and hand-lettered paper shelf label near foot; tight and internally near fine. Tight and decent first edition of No. 11 in the "Papers of The Shakespeare Society of New York," bearing interesting author inscription on front flyleaf: "To Senator Allison / With the compliments / of the author. / June 3, 1899." Welker Given (1853-1938) was a respected Iowa editor and journalist and later owner of the "Iowa Times-Republican" in Des Moines -- and apparently an amateur Shakespeare scholar. It's not surprising that he would present this to his state's powerful and bookish U.S. senator. From the collection of William B. Allison (1829-1908), the powerful Iowa Republican who, as U.S. senator from that state (1873-1908), was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years, he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown records "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. Notes Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics," Allison owned "hundreds of books on government, economics, history, banking, finance, and the tariff. An omnivorous reader, Allison doubtless read most of these volumes, if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation.". Signed.…
