Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. Undated but handwritten date in pencil inside the front board 1/3/04 (1904). Folded map approx 73cms x 52cms backed by blue boards with gilt titles. Stamped "Chief Engineer's Office, Parliamentary Dept" in several places not affecting the map. There are a number of annotations in pencil, one of which states LMS Canals shown in green and these are indeed very neatly highlighted in green ink. The linen backed map shows a little wear but is complete and perfectly usable. The boards are sl. rubbed & the stitching starting to come apart a little along the spine joints.

Ajouter au panierFirst and sole edition, one of 325 copies, presentation copy from Wells's widow, with an autograph letter signed, "To dear Lilian, with best love from, Ida, May 17th 1934", on the letterhead of Houghton Lodge, Stockbridge, Hampshire. Sir Lionel Wells (1859-1929) served for 30 years in the Royal Navy (1871-1901) and was Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade from 1896 to 1903. In late 1914 Wells was reappointed to the navy, serving firstly at Sunderland and then Thurso and Wick in Caithness, before being appointed King's Harbour Master at Mudros Bay, Gallipoli. Printed here is correspondence with such figures as Beatty, Jellicoe, Jackie Fisher, Haig, Baden-Powell, Lloyd George, Lord Northcliffe, and Franklin D. Roosevelt (as acting secretary of the US Navy). There is much detail on convoy operations, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli campaigns, and Jutland. Octavo. Tissue-guarded photogravure portrait frontispiece of Wells after Frank Arthur Swaine. Original moderate purplish blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front cover, the latter with the Wells crest gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Loosely inserted is a cutting from the Hampshire Chronicle (16 June 1934), giving a lengthy review of the book. Small white mark to front cover, scattered foxing. A very good copy.
