Ajouter au panierSoftcover. Etat : Like New. First Edition in Paperback. The first essay collection devoted specifically to Wendell Berry?s fiction. Berry is better known as a poet, essayist, and advocate for sustainable agriculture, yet the editors and contributors argue that his novels and short stories, set in the fictional Kentucky community of Port William, are central to his vision and deserve equal attention. The essays are organized into three parts: Narrative Traditions, Beauty?s Instructions, and Responding to the Stories. Overall, the collection treats Berry?s fiction as a sustained imaginative effort to make a good, placed life visible and compelling.ABOUT THIS COPY: Softcover. Illustrated cover in color against a black background with light blue and white lettering on the cover and spine. Indexed. xxv, 197 pp. A very nice, like new copy. Full refund if not satisfied.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Prominent author and cultural critic Wendell Berry is well known for his contributions to agrarianism and environmentalism, but his commentary on education has received comparatively little attention. Berry has been eloquently unmasking America's cultural obsession with restless mobility for decades, arguing that it causes damage to both the land and the character of our communities. Education, he maintains, plays a central role in this obsession, inculcating in students' minds the American dream of moving up and moving on.Drawing on Berry's essays, fiction, and poetry, Jack R. Baker and Jeffrey Bilbro illuminate the influential thinker's vision for higher education in this pathbreaking study. Each chapter begins with an examination of one of Berry's fictional narratives and then goes on to consider how the passage inspires new ways of thinking about the university's mission. Throughout, Baker and Bilbro argue that instead of training students to live in their careers, universities should educate students to inhabit and serve their places. The authors also offer practical suggestions for how students, teachers, and administrators might begin implementing these ideas.Baker and Bilbro conclude that institutions guided by Berry's vision might cultivate citizens who can begin the work of healing their communities -- graduates who have been educated for responsible membership in a family, a community, or a polity.…

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a hand made high school year book assembled by Lucy Wendell Baker of Springfield, Illinois. She graduated from high school in 1922. Book size about 6 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches. Bound in tan paper over boards with a floral pattern cloth spine cover. One of those early Yearbooks where the publisher provided an outline of what to enter in the book and then the student filled-in the book in whatever manner they chose. This is an average example of the type with photos of the author & friends, various school programs, other printed material, hand written sports information, card from visit to a sideshow freak, and other material. I could say this is rare, but it is actually unique, one of a kind, as are all these old hand-made yearbooks. The five photos I have included with the listing just touch on the contents. A reference book for Women's Studies showing how the young girl of the 1920's was educated. This is one volume in a collection of some 65 of these old Yearbooks ranging from the late 1800's to the 1930's mostly from the Midwest which will be in my book seller catalog titled 'Women'. Hinges cracked and mended in several places; overall average wear. GOOD Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. Signed by Author. …
