This includes short explanations and lyrics to U.S. war songs from the Revolutionary War through World War I, including "Over There" by G.M. Cohan, "America the Beautiful" by K. Bates, "Yankee Doodle" (unknown), "Hail, Hail, The Gangs All Here" by D.A. Esrom, along with dozens of other well-known songs (and some not so well-known!). Contents include Announcement, Dedication, Memorial, Tributes, Introduction, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War, Alphabetical List of Songs, and Index. William Bond Wheelwright was a noted historian, author, journalist, and publisher. The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) is an American organization composed of women who are descended from an ancestor "who came to reside in an American Colony before 1776, and whose services were rendered during the Colonial Period." The organization has 44 corporate societies. The national headquarters is Dumbarton House in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The organization was founded in 1891, shortly after the founding of a similar society, the Colonial Dames of America (CDA), which was created to have a centrally organized structure under the control of the parent Society in New York City. The NSCDA was intended as a federation of State Societies in which each unit had a degree of autonomy. Organized following the United States Centennial of 1876 and a Centennial of the US Constitution in New York in 1889, the NSCDA has worked in historic preservation, restoration and the interpretation of historic sites since its New York Society first undertook the preservation of the Van Cortlandt House in 1897. The organization includes 44 corporate societies. Its headquarters is located at Dumbarton House, in Washington, D.C. In addition to its activities in museum work, the Society sponsors scholarship programs and other historic preservation, patriotic service and educational projects. Since the NSCDA's founding in 1891, the organization has worked to help tell America's many stories and amplify women's voices. The NSCDA serves as stewards of historic properties, curators of collections, archivists of historic artifacts, and researchers of genealogical histories. It was one of the first women's organizations to honor women in the military, and during two world wars, we partnered with the Red Cross to support our troops. In addition to serving as stewards of historic properties, The NSCDA built the Spanish-American Monument (1902) in Arlington National Cemetery, the Church at Jamestown (1907), and the Plymouth Canopy (1921) at Plymouth Rock as reminders of significant events in American history. In 2020, the organization launched Great American Treasures, an alliance of more than 60 historic homes and sites all across the country. [40]pp. Boston, Peabody Museum of Harvard University, "All Navajo Ceremonies are chanted for the healing of sickness of mind or body. These records are selected from the collection, belonging to the Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art of Santa Fe, New Mexico, most of which consist of chants sung on the reservation by Navajo medicine men years ago and recorded by Dr. George Herzog, Dr. Harry Hoijer, and Father Berard Haile" (Introduction). The booklet also includes translations of the lyrics of these chants, not limited to those represented on the recordings "because I desired to give enough to show the unity and beauty of the Navajo chants as literature. This beauty, however, is not the result of a self-conscious esthetic tradition. The songs are essentially magical. They frequently repeat four times in order to strengthen the force of the prayer and are directed to the East, South, West, and North, calling help from the sources of power" (ibid). The booklet also reproduces the pictographs used by the vocalist, Son of Bead Chant Singer, as a mnemonic system for the words. The complete set of records and the booklet are rarely found together.
