Covering both invertebrate and vertebrate species, the authors investigate three-dimensional animal aggregations from a variety of disciplines, from physics to mathematics to biology. The first section is devoted to the various methods, mainly optical and acoustic, used to collect three-dimensional data over time. The second section focuses on analytical methods used to quantify pattern, group kinetics, and interindividual interactions within the group. The section on behavioural ecology and evolution deals with the functions of aggregative behaviour from the point of view of an inherently selfish individual member. The final section uses models to elucidate how group dynamics at the individual level creates emergent pattern at the level of the group.

Based on the 1958 film directed by Martin Ritt, which was in turn based on the 1931 novella "Spotted Horses," the 1939 short story "Barn Burning," and the 1940 novel "The Hamlet" by William Faulkner. The series followed the Varners, a wealthy Mississippi family whose patriarch is forced to confront the newly arrived young son of his former rival, who challenges the Varners' control over the town. Set in the fictitious town of Frenchman's Bend, Mississippi. Red titled wrappers, noted as FIRST DRAFT on the front wrapper, dated October 7, 1964. Title page present, dated October 7, 1964, noted as FIRST DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Earl Hamner, film screenwriters Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr., and story and novel credits to William Faulkner. 63 leaves, with last page of text numbered 58. Pages are generally bright. Worming to the outer margin of page 144 onwards to volume I. Heavier to the 'Various Readings' section to the rear, not affecting the text. Small worm holes to the outer margins of the first 90 pages to volume II, not affecting text. Front endpapers to volume II have adhered to each other. Worming to the edge of 'Various Readings' to the rear of volume V, not affecting the text. Pressed leaves loosely inserted to volume III, only causing the most minor offsetting. Small closed tear to the fore-edge of Pp2 to volume V. Just the odd spots to pages. Good Only. book.
