Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book begins with the last years of the horse-drawn sweeper and ends with the development of the motor-driven sweeper used on our streets today. The author walks us through the development of street cleaning in America, from the protests during the Progressive Era to the technological marvel that solved many environmental issues affecting cities around the globe. Health hazards and poor living conditions due to street filth were huge concerns. The author explains how the steamroller, the automobile, and the Elgin Motor Sweeper helped improve city streets. Understanding the social significance of street sanitation provides an insightful look into how industrialization spurred innovation in urban planning and public health.
