The greatest achievement of any Russian general serving Comrade Stalin during (and in the years shortly prior to) the Second World War was, of course, simply not getting shot by Comrade Stalin. The homicidal dictator purged so much of the Red Army staff during the 1930s for "political unreliability" -- and then refused to let his officers communicate by radio, for fear their messages would be intercepted -- that the Russian defense effort in 1940 was nothing short of chaos. Zhukov survived and won many later battles against the Germans and is thus worth reading, whether we can trust his accounts of how courageously he stood up to the Georgian dwarf, or not. It's worth noting, however, that his doctrine was that troops should simply charge across a minefield -- since they'd lose no more men than if they charged a machine gun -- and that since he'd shoot them for cowardice if they refused to charge a machine gun, the same punishment applied in the case of balking at the minefield. Whether such an approach would have succeeded in other modern armies remains unclear. 280 pp. including index. World War II military history. Reduced from $16.
