Hardback. Etat : Good. Swimming the Volga is an eyewitness account of day-to-day life in a provincial Russian city during a remarkable period in world history just before the names Putin and Russia became inseparable. After seventy years of tyranny and oppression under a series of iron-fisted regimes, Russia turned away from its failed social and political experiment. It took its first steps toward adopting a democratic and free-market system under perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness). During Zwack's regular visits to Kalinin, he witnessed firsthand ordinary people's lives turned upside down by forces they had little or no control over. In the Wild West of the 'new' Russia, a few enterprising Russians quickly figured out how to make vast amounts of money-usually illegally. A nascent mafia mastered the art of bringing necessary and desirable goods to market and extracting 'protection' money from new businesses. Most Russians, however, watched their life savings disappear in two massive devaluations of the ruble in the 1990s. Written in the days just before the names Putin and Russia became inseparable, Brigadier General Peter B. Zwack (Ret)'s Swimming the Volga is a unique time capsule of a remarkable period in world history, one that began with the final chapter of the Cold War and ended with the hijacking of Russia's future by rapacious financiers, pyramid schemes, and a new criminal element setting the stage for Putin's arrival, and with it, a more assertive and revanchist Russia. Along the way, the cast of memorable characters in the story reveals their very human dreams, ambitions, fears, missteps, cynicism, resilience, and disillusionment. What will make Swimming the Volga stand out in the marketplace is the author, who lived and experienced Russian culture firsthand. His many accomplished years of high-ranking military authority, extensive knowledge and grasp of the language and culture, and brilliance as an educator, speaker, and writer. Former Attaché to the Russian Federation, Zwack is a current Global Fellow at The Kennan Institute for Advanced Russia Studies at The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. No one is more qualified to write and speak on this subject than him.…

Trade paperback. Etat : Good. This book is 8.5 inches by 5 inches. xvi, 116 pages. Some cover wear. This is a pre-publication limited edition of 50 copies. The memoir covers the author's visits to Kalinin over a period of ten years from 1989 to 1999, Inscribed and signed by the author, Retired Brigadier General Peter B. Zwack, on the title page. The inscription reads: "Dear Steve, I hope you find this very personal '[illegible]' interesting and entertaining, Warmly, Peter P.S. Pulling for you on the medical front!" The Foreward on page xi has a sticker that reads: "Forward to be contributed by Jill Dougherty Russia Expert for CNN News for over 30 years." The cover shows some scuff marks around the edges. This is a memoir loaded with insights and stories from the author's days before serving as the U.S. Defense Attache in Moscow (from 2012-2014) and from his deep involvement with Russia. Peter B. Zwack is a retired American brigadier general who served for some years during the Obama administration as military attaché to the US Embassy in Russia. In 1980 Zwack received his commission at Fort Benning, Georgia, and began his career in the US Army as an intelligence officer in an artillery battalion. He is an Army Ranger and paratrooper. His career included stops in West Germany, South Korea, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Russia. Zwack was employed in military intelligence and was Senior Defense Attaché in Russia from 2012 to 2014, appointed to work with Hillary Clinton and left under John Kerry. Zwack has become a notable academic. His ideas are cited in books and he is regularly a presence in the news analysis circuit. Swimming the Volga is a distinctly personal tale written by Brigadier General Peter B. Zwack {Ret.} that begins in 1989 (in the waning years of the Cold War) when as a young army Captain, he received both a Soviet visa and US approval to study Russian at a regional university in Kalinin. This non-fiction narrative reads quickly and easily and covers Zwack's forays and experiences in Russia over the turbulent 1990s just before the rise of Vladimir Putin. During his multiple visits to Tver, he reconnects with an unforgettable cast of friends and acquaintances - regular Russian citizens - he originally met in 1989. Throughout, Zwack seamlessly weaves stories of Russian people, their history, culture and politics into a warm and inspired story that captures this crucial decade with a keen observer's eye. First edition of a memoir that explores the author's personal experience as a child of emigre parents. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, illustrated with black and white photographs. Association copy, warmly inscribed by author on the front free endpaper, "Dear Madam Secretary.Hope this resonates with you and that you find this memoir of an Old Europe past of interest. Truly enjoyed and was honored meeting you. With warmest regards from a fellow child of emigre Serving on behalf of our great nation Peter Zwak Jr BG, USA June 2012 Washington DC." With an autograph letter signed by the author to Albright laid in. The recipient, Madeleine K. Albright was the first woman to serve as the U.S. Secretary of State. She acted under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001, leading the United States through foreign policy in the Middle East with the endorsement of military action in Iraq. At the 1998 NATO summit, Albright coined the â3 Dsâ of NATO, âwhich is no diminution of NATO, no discrimination and no duplication â" because I think that we donât need any of those three âDsâ to happen.â After her tenure as Secretary of State, she served as chair of the consulting Albright Stonebridge Group and was the Michael and Virginia Mortara Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown Universityâs School of Foreign Service. For Albrightâs contributions to foreign policy and relations that defined a century, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Bookplate to the front pastedown from, âThe Private Collection of Secretary Madeleine K. Albright.â If You Wear Galoshes, You're an Emigre by Peter Zwack is a memoir that explores the author's personal experiences as a child of emigre parents, navigating the complexities of cultural identity and displacement. Zwack reflects on his family's journey from Hungary to the United States during the Cold War and their efforts to adapt to a new life while maintaining connections to their European roots. The book examines themes of exile, adaptation, and the search for belonging, with a particular focus on the immigrant experience in America. Through a mix of personal anecdotes and historical context, Zwack offers a unique perspective on the emotional and practical challenges of being an emigre in a foreign land, shedding light on the broader immigrant experience in the 20th century.…
