The first printed edition of King Alfred's Will, at the Claredon Press in 1788 with the 1828 reprint. 1788 edition stab-stitched in paper wraps with the 1828 in a quarter cloth binding. Translator, Rev. Owen Manning sourced the original text from theThe New Minster Liber Vitae, the register of New Minster, Winchester. The majority of entries have been dated between 1028 and 1032.Its provenance can be traced back to Walter Clavel, who was in possession of the manuscript from approximately 1710. From there, it passed through several hands before being donated to the MS. library of Mr Thomas Astle in 1769, today found in the British Library (Stowe MS 944). The 1788 edition is a wonderfully thorough scholarly work, partly printed in exquisite Old English type. Manning produced the Old English text parallel to a literal English translation, followed by both a free translation and a Latin translation. (ESTC T87078). The later reprint includes a lengthy preface with additional notes printed to the rear. This text is a monumental record of succession of the Anlgo Saxon crown, the rights, liberties and privileges of nobility during that period as well as numerous fascinating facts including the nature of land tenures and estates. Both volumes with the personal library label of Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, University of Oxford, to the inner front wrap and front pastedown. As of the summer of 2026, a historical researcher claims to have located the final resting place of King Alfred beneath a car park in Winchester, though this yet to be substantiated by archeologists. 1788 edition stab-stitched in paper wraps. 1828 edition in a quarter cloth binding.Externally, smart. 1788 with light soiling to wraps and minor chipping to untrimmed extremties. Archival reinforcement to hinge at both boards. Internally, both volumes generally firmly bound. Some minor straining to hinges throughout, due to style of binding. Extremely uncommon, Library Hub shows a "second edition" of 1840 at BL and NLS, and a further edition of 1846 in BL; WorldCat lists copies of the present edition in Library of Congress and University of Pennsylvania. With a series of ownership inscriptions to the front pastedown: Lieut. H. O. Kedwick 67th regiment; Lieut. Frederick Rainsford, interpreter and quartermaster 67th regiment, who has noted the regiment's arrival in "Arracan" in 1837; and Henry Cotton, lieutenant adjutant 67th regiment. Cotton commanded the regiment during the Second Anglo-Burmese War, and died in Dehra Dun during the mutiny. Octavo (203 x 118 mm) Contemporary Indian calf. 4-page unpaginated prelims, and 68-pages of text, addenda leaf mounted on the rear pastedown, entirely interleaved.
