I do not have a great deal of experience with fine art but still I would not hesitate to say that this book should be one of the basic references for anyone who appreciates fine painting. This very large book (10 ¼ x 12 ½ inches, 255 pages) was published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Harry N. Abrams of New York, dated 1985, with no mention of edition. The book is bound in aquamarine boards with silver gilt titles and protected by a glossy, pictorial dust jacket. I particularly agreed with the comment by Director of the Museum in his Foreword who observes that the wide appeal ofthis genre of paintingarises from the nature of the subjects themselves moments of pleasure in daily life, in sunlit settings, on the banks of rivers, or at the seashore. The book is lavishly illustrated with 172 color plates, of which 46 are details of the plates. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The dust jacket is clean and glossy without edge wear but with a bit of light scuffing to the finish of the rear cover. The hard covers are pristine. Inside, the book is unmarked except for an embossed symbol of the former owner. The pages and plates are bright and clean throughout, without toning or foxing of any kind. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
