For the first time, artists visually broke through the flat surface of the parchment, achieving an unprecedented sense of depth in interior scenes. At the same time, their exquisite details and masterful effects of light and shadow offered a new realism and brilliance to painted landscapes, and they enlivened the margins of their pages with pictures of flowers and insects in trompe l'oeil. All of their innovations were soon widely imitated. One unusual aspect of this volume, which accompanies a 1996 exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Florence, Italy, is its focus on the individuals who commissioned and purchased these works.
