Two-volume set of letters (mostly from the 1950s) from influential science fiction editor John W. Campbell, who corresponded with nearly everyone in the field. Volume 1 was published in 1985, Volume 2 in 1993. The hardcover was a limited print run. In this pair, the first volume is 63 of 750. The second volume is a print overrun, marked O/R of 350 copies. The second volume was sent to Science Fiction Grand Master James Gunn with a cover letter from one of the editors, Perry A. Chapdelaine, Sr., which is included. Both volumes are in near fine condition, unread, crisp, and solid. The only signs of wear are: on Volume 1, a scuff on the bottom of the spine and two small red steaks on the upper front cover; and, on Volume 2, slightly dented corners and two black marks, a streak from a marker or some sort and two small spots on the back cover. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An American science fiction writer and editor. John W. Campbell was editor of Astounding Science Fiction (later called Analog Science Fiction and Fact) from late 1937 until his death and was part of the Golden Age of Science Fiction.These two books could not possibly encompass the enormous volumns of letters written by Campbell to authors and would-be authors over his 30+ years as an editor. That being said there where very specific criteria for the selection of letters in both volumn 1 and volumn 2. Volumn 1 was much more general in its selection than was volumn 2. In volumn 2 the only criteria for selection was whether or not Isaac Asimov and/or A.E. van Vogt and/or their stories where mentioned in the letters. Both volumns are very insightful reading to understand the direction Campbell was moving science fiction and the post Campbell condition of modern science fiction writing. Must have books for any person interested in the genesis of modern SF. The volume 1 paperback is in excellent condition with the exception, the pages are browning. Binding is square and the covers are not damaged, may never have been read. Volume 2, the hardcoved book is also in excellent condition with the exception of the outside edges and inside covers show foxing. Boards and binding are flat and square.
