Oktober 1931 in Lithonia, Georgia) war ein US-amerikanischer Bluespionier und einer der führenden Vertreter des sogenannten Atlanta Blues. Barbecue Bob erlernte das Gitarrenspiel von seinem Bruder Charley Hicks, der als Laughing Charley Lincoln ebenfalls ein bekannter Bluesgitarrist war. Die beiden Brüder übersiedelten 1923 nach Atlanta, wo sie häufig zusammen auftraten, hier wechselte Robert auch zur zwölfsaitigen Gitarre. Hicks bediente sich häufig des Bottleneckspiels. Sein Bluesstil erinnerte dabei eher an den Delta Blues als an den Gitarrenstil eines Blind Willie McTell, der in Georgia wahrscheinlich auch zum Umfeld von Barbecue Bob gehörte. Seinen Spitznamen erhielt er 1927, als er von einem Talentscout der Firma Columbia Records als Straßenmusiker vor einem Barbecue-Restaurant entdeckt wurde, ein Werbefoto zeigte ihn dementsprechend in einer Küchenuniform mit Gitarre. Während seiner kurzen Karriere nahm er zwischen 1927 und 1930 mit 68 Stücken ein vergleichsweise umfangreiches Werk auf, drei der Stücke sind jedoch noch verschollen. Für seinen Bruder und seinen Jugendfreund Curley Weaver arrangierte er erste Aufnahmemöglichkeiten. Mit Curley Weaver und Buddy Moss, dem er die ersten Gitarrengriffe beibrachte, nahm er 1930 als Georgia Cotton Pickers auf. 1931 starb er an einer Tuberkulose in Verbindung mit einer Lungenentzündung. Oktober 1996) war ein bemerkenswerter kroatischer Archäologe. Vinski wurde am 3. Mai 1913 in Zagreb in eine jüdische Familie geboren, wo er die Grundschule und das Gymnasium beendete. Sein Vater war Oton Vinski, ein einflussreicher kroatischer Bankier, und seine Mutter war ¦tefanija Alexander, die aus der Familie Zagreb Alexander stammte. Vinski ist Absolvent der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Wien. 1937 erhielt er sein Postgraduiertendiplom, das er 1938 an der Fakultät für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften der Universität Zagreb übersetzte.[1] Vinski war Dozent an der Abteilung für allgemeine und nationale mittelalterliche Archäologie an der Universität Zagreb.[2] Seine Arbeiten gelten als wesentlich für den Aufbau des Apparats der kroatischen Archäologie nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.[3] Es war Vinski, der die Kulturstätte Bijelo Brdo ("Weißer Hügel") 1 an der Drau östlich von Osijek auf das 7. President Carter's Blues starts with the warm reception the President received from the blues singers. But the continuing energy crisis and the failure of the President to tackle the economy soon led to frustration and disappointment. President Reagan's Blues shows how Reagan's tough and successful measures to revive the economy hurt the poor most. Reagan was never able to convince African-Americans that he was not racially prejudiced. His "Star Wars" space-age national defense plan led to fears of a nuclear war, and the rise of the home computer to fears of unemployment. President G.H.W. Bush's Blues deals with the fight against drug abuse, and comments on the Gulf War. The President's failure to tackle the economy cost him his initial popularity. President Clinton's Blues shows how strongly African Americans supported the most popular of these six presidents. This is achieved by an analysis of blues and gospel lyrics of the period containing more or less direct social and political comment. The lyrics of these often very rare records, which have never been systematically transcribed before, are vital and hitherto neglected sources of oral history. When Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded the assassinated President Kennedy he was hailed enthusiastically by the blues and gospel singers, most of whom had been born in the southern states and saw an ally in the new Texas president. Johnson's acute political skills ensured that the 1964 Civil Rights Bill was approved by Congress. However, the President was not allowed to reap the benefits of the Act for long. The violent clash in Selma, Alabama, sped up the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Next, the plight of the black ghettoes led to nationwide riots and the president and Rev. King drifted apart. Military build-up in Vietnam rose dramatically in the Johnson era. Proportionally there were not more African Americans in Vietnam, but their death rate was thirty percent higher. Johnson was forced to launch operation "Rolling Thunder" to intensify air attacks, but felt trapped by the consequences of his decisions and became severely depressed. People began burning their draft cards, and criticism of the once popular president became quite outspoken in blues and gospel lyrics. When Martin Luther King lashed out against the war in 1967, the president felt betrayed by his former civil rights ally. After the 1968 Tet offensive, Johnson's approval rating dropped to 36%. The book also analyzes in depth the profound effect the 1968 assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy had on the African-American community. The resultant awakening of black self consciousness is dealt with in a final chapter.…
