It emphasizes the fact that the Minto dialect of Lower Tanana Athabascan is the language of the area's people -- benhti, "among the lakes," kokht'ana "people." Although the name for Minto may be pronounced Benhti or Menhti, the word benh in the book's title is to be taken as the word for 'lake,' and not part of the name for Minto Village. Benhti Kokht'ana Kenaga' is more than the language of a single village, even though it is spoken only in Minto now.

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Fine. 2nd Edition. 217 pp., bibliography. Central Siberian Yupik (also called Yupigestun and Akuzipik) is the only indigenous language spoken in both the New World and the Old. It is the ancestral language of about 1200 Eskimos living on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska and an equal number of their close relatives on the Siberian side of the Bering Strait. This practical grammar begins by discussing the sounds and spelling of the language. Each following chapter starts with a vocabulary list consisting mostly of common words but including also a few interesting unusual words. Postbases and endings are the introduced and grammatical topics are discussed with examples given. Each chapter has a series of exercises. Appendices include inflectional tables and a number of fully annotated traditional stories. Public policy concerning Siberian Yupik has followed sometimes parallel and sometimes diverging paths in Russia and in Alaska. The development of the language, particularly in its written form, is amply demonstrated int his book through illustrations from both countries. Siberian Yupik is unlike the various Eskimo languages of mainland Alaska, Canada, and Greenland in one significant way; it has been heavily influenced by another indigenous language. This grammar therefor discusses the influence of Chukchi, Siberian Yupik's neighbor to the west.

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. 492 pp., illustrations. This book is a product of an unprecedented gathering of Yup'ik Elders from villages throughout southwestern Alaska. In May 2003, under the Kinguliamta Ciunerkaat [Securing A Future For Our Children] project administered by the Association of Village Council Presidents, more then twenty Elders met in Bethel to discuss matters crucial to the wellbeing of Yup'ik people, the oral instruction and rules for living. The contents of this book reflect the progression of the gathering, where Elder men and women were divided into two groups and discussed instructions and maxims concerning the care of children followed by advice for adolescents and married couples. The Elders candidly and thoughtfully shared life lessons that have been passed down from their ancestors in hopes that younger generations will reclaim them. Their guidelines and personal accounts presented in the Yup'ik language with English translations are truly medicine.
